Late last night control mobilised the crew to an RTC persons trapped in Vehicle. OIC Kev took charge and left the station with a crew of 5. The team was the first emergency service in attendance and got straight to work. On arrival the crew were met with a vehicle on its roof and the occupant still inside. Utilising the RTC equipment the crews got to work releasing the occupant from the vehicle and providing casualty care whilst the remainder of crew got to work making the Vehicle safe. Totnes fire crews also mobilised along with police who also assisted with scene safety when in attendance. Once able to the occupant of the vehicle was then transferred into the care of the Ambulance service. This incident was another excellent example of multi agency incident management which brought the incident to a close. Thanks also to Kingsbridge Auto for prompt recovery of Vehicle and allowing the main road to be reopened.

We’re deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of seven children and two adults, in both inland and coastal waters, over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Our Chief Fire Officer, Gavin Ellis, spoke on BBC 5 Live this morning about the dangers of inland water, where accidental drowning deaths have now been higher than coastal incidents for the seventh year in a row.

Although rivers, lakes and reservoirs may look calm and inviting in the hot weather, hidden currents and cold water shock can quickly become life-threatening. Water temperatures are currently only around 14–16Β°C, which can cause an involuntary gasp response and lead to drowning.

Please avoid swimming in inland waterways and encourage others to do the same.

If you unexpectedly enter the water, remember to float:

β€’ Tilt your head back with ears submerged
β€’ Breathe normally
β€’ Move your hands to stay afloat
β€’ Spread your arms and legs for stability

Floating can save your life.

Yesterday turned into a busy day for our crew at Dartmouth, 2 shouts one after another. The first call from control was to a fire alarm sounding at a domestic property in Dartmouth. On arrival IC Kev found the first floor of the building to be filled with smoke and ordered the rapid deployment of two personnel in breathing apparatus. A forced entry was made into the building and the cause of the fire was quickly identified and dealt with. Fire crews also used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the property of smoke. Our neighbours, Brixham came over the river Dart to back us up.

Not long after, the crew were mobilised again by control to a confirmed caravan fire which had spread to two small boats. Our South Hams friends, Salcombe arrived before us tackling the fires head on. FF Lee, FF Arran and Driver Callum then began the task of finding the nearest hydrant and starting a water shuttle. Soon after, the call to Kingsbridge was made for extra support, they responded quickly to assist with fire fighting. Once the site was made safe to leave, the crew headed back to station and ended up having a quiet evening.

Always good to see our friends over at Salcombe, Brixham and Kingsbridge. A good example of local community Fire stations all working together.

This week’s drill night was mostly focused on SWAH, particularly an over roof work restraint system. The team laid out the system on ground level to be able to talk through the individual components and how to use it safely.

After we competed the first part of our drill night, we set up a confined space rescue giving our crew the excuse to crawl through the smartie tube. Along with the confined space rescue, our crew refreshed their knowledge on the use of a gas monitor and what readings to look out for.

Late on Easter Sunday, the team were mobilised by fire control as a relief team to a fire in a derelict building in Torquay. The crew mobilised quickly with a team of 5 and headed across the river Dart on the Higher Ferry.

As a relief crew, it was our job to take over from another crew that had been at a job for a while. Our crew took over from Newton Abbot but, after 4 hours since the incident started, it was almost under control and our crews waited just in case extra support was needed. A few hours in and the make up call was made so the team headed back home just in time to catch the ferry.

Yesterday, the team were mobilised by fire control to a chimney fire with reports of flames coming out of the top of the chimney at a hotel in town. With Driver Sam at the helm, our pump left the station with a full crew and quickly made their way down to the hotel.

On arrival, with smoke on the ground floor and multiple chimneys to deal with, the β€œmake up” call was given by our IC Kev to control to mobilise an additional appliance and aerial ladder platform to assist. While support was on their way, Daz, Arran and Lee began extinguishing the fire places and setting up the chimney extinguishing equipment to work on one of the chimneys.

Once the Paignton crew arrived, they set to work on the other chimney and the aerial platform tackled any issues from above the building. Any heat spots were quickly extinguished and there was no damage to the hotel.

Big thanks to Paignton and Torquay for their quick assistance.
