This pretty much sums up my day, a good breakfast at my neighbour's Bainloch Deer Park, taking down a few more 16 meter Sitka Spruce until sunset, then home for a couple of warm chocolate brownies.

The first primrose is out, so 'Primrose Bank' on my wood's map is still relevant. 'Where the 100 Snowdrops aren't ' is also still relevant as I checked that corner carefully and there is not a single snowdrop showing, after two years I suspect the mice have found and devoured every single one I planted.

It's been a bit windy in the woods overnight, this tree decided to unplug itself and was rocking a bit so it had to come down before it fell of it's own accord.

We put my ATV to the test today dragging some 4 and 5 meter Spruce stems up the hill to clear the track that was blocked a few weeks ago (wind blow). Biggest challenge was a stock trailer with a pile of logs, but low ratio, 4 wheel drive and two grown men leaning over the front axles got the thing, bouncing and wiggling it's way, up the steepest part of the track.
Two root plates (with three and four mature Spruce stumps) had to be winched over as the wind had blown them more than 90 degrees over. Still a bit of log stacking to do but the track is fully open again (even if it is pretty chewed up).

Even using my cheapest saw, and a relatively dull chain I did manage to cut my first two Spruce boards today.

When it rains a lot, as it has these past three weeks, the trees are no longer anchored in soil, but in mud, so they fall over more easily, however there is one tree that has it's roots wrapped around a few huge boulders that they rock but always come back upright. If I was brave enough to stand next to this one on a wet and windy day it would be fun to see, and hear, the rock moving, and the mud squelching in and out of the socket.

My neighbour wanted to reduce the amount of Spruce , so got a contractor in to do it. I was asked if I wanted my spruce taken out at the same time. Foolishly I said I would do my own with my chainsaw and ATV. Although my 4 acres are 80% Spruce I now see what amount of timber that can produce ! This stack is only half of what the contractors have harvested for my neighbour. Next time I will give more weight to the wisdom and experience of my neighbour.

While trying to have a nap yesterday in the woods there was an almost constant whirring of small bird wings as they came down for some peanuts I left out (about 3 feet away). The Nuthatch walks the last couple of feet and they feet and claws are much bigger than the other birds so they are much louder, this all makes getting to sleep challenging. 10 minutes into my nap I was rudely awoken by a Coal Tit as it landed on my hand, only flying off when I opened oney eye and said "excuse me".

It certainly feels like autumn in the woods, bracken is turning colour as are the oaks. It is a mast year so I am having to wear a hard hat because I've had enough of large acorns hitting me on my head. I love the colours of all the fungi which appear at apparently random spots, one of these days I will pay proper attention to the species, the soil types and what trees are nearby, as well as the time of year and weather conditions - and only then will I look to see which ones make good eating (apparently you can eat them all, but some only once!).
