โThis body-worn video footage captures the moment a Caerphilly county motorist failed a roadside eyesight test after knocking down an 84-year-old woman crossing the road in Pengam.
๐ฎ Speaking to officers, Andrew Perry knew he had Stargardt disease but claimed his eyesight was not affected by this degenerative eye condition and said he didnโt need to wear glasses while driving.
๐ However, officers challenged Perryโs claims, proving that his poor eyesight was a significant and dangerous factor in the collision, which sadly led to the death of Gaynor James.
PC Spencer Clease, the officer in the case, said:
๐ฌ โThis is a tragic case that has resulted in the needless loss of a life. Perry was diagnosed with Stargardt disease in 2001 and should not have been driving.โ ๐ฌ
Mrs James' daughters Rhian Brooke and Cerys Phillips said:
๐ฌ โOur dear mother, Mrs Gaynor James is remembered, missed and loved every day by her family, friends and the community, of which she had been a part of, for so long.
โWe will remember her kindness and her selfless, caring nature. She remains in our thoughts and prayers always.โ ๐ฌ
โน๏ธ Perry, now 56, was sentenced to six years and 10 months imprisonment โ and disqualified from driving for life - at Newport Crown Court on Tuesday 16 June after previously pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
โ If you're concerned about your eyesight and are worried that it might impact your ability to drive safely and legally, we would urge motorists to seek advice from their GP or optometrist.
