Your Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) is elected by local people and is accountable for how crime

The Police and Crime Commissioner is responsible for:

• finding out what you think about policing and crime in Gwent
• making sure your voice is heard and listened to
• setting priorities for Gwent Police
• preparing the Police and Crime Plan that contains the policing and crime priorities
• publishing a yearly report that tells you whether policing and crime priorities and targets have been met
• hiring and firing (if necessary) the Chief constable of Gwent Police
• deciding the policing budget and the amount of money used from your council tax to pay for police services
• commissioning policing and crime services
• making arrangements with criminal justice bodies to provide an effective and efficient criminal justice system in Gwent

Opportunity: Indirect Victim Needs Assessment

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent is inviting suitably qualified organisations or consultants to provide a quotation for an Indirect Victim Needs Assessment.

This work will help us better understand the experiences and support needs of people who are indirectly affected by the criminal behaviour of someone close to them, with a particular focus on those connected to individuals arrested or convicted of sexual offences.

The findings will help inform future policy and commissioning decisions, so that support can better reflect people’s needs.

Key information:
• Maximum budget: £15,000 (excluding VAT).
• Closing date for submissions: 5pm on 30 September 2026.
• Anticipated contract start date: 19 October 2026.
• Final deliverables required by: 29 January 2027.
We welcome quotations from organisations and consultants with experience in research, needs assessments, victim services, safeguarding, criminal justice, public protection, and working with vulnerable adults and children.

I am pleased to have contributed towards an underwater drone that will help the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) search technically demanding stretches of water.

The specialist drone will support crews in searching difficult underwater environments more quickly and safely, while reducing the risks faced by volunteers during challenging operations.

👏 SARA is crewed entirely by volunteers and regularly assists Gwent Police with missing person searches and incidents along the Severn Estuary. The funding reflects my commitment to supporting partners who play a vital role in protecting communities and assisting emergency services across Gwent.

I held my latest Public Accountability Forum with Chief Constable Mark Hobrough to discuss issues affecting communities in Blaenau Gwent.

The latest forum was recorded at the iconic Llanhilleth Miners Institute and included questions about off-road biking in Brynmawr, anti-social behaviour in Tredegar, and theft in Abertillery. It is available to view on the Commissioner’s website and social media channels.

The Public Accountability Forum is an important way for residents to put their questions and concerns directly to the Chief Constable. By having open, honest and transparent conversations, we can make sure local voices are listened to and that communities have a meaningful role in shaping policing across Gwent.

🎧Last week my team visited the summer holiday project. It was fantastic to see children from Torfaen busting their moves and learning how to DJ at the Hip Hop 12 summer holiday project. I was delighted to support the sessions with funding from my Police & Crime Commissioner’s (PCC) Community Fund.

This marks the start of a busy week meeting new learners at all five Coleg Gwent sites. My team will be providing lots of free crime prevention items and gaining their perspectives about how they feel about the police.

🙌I am delighted to have sponsored a series of crafty cinema sessions at The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre this summer, giving children a fun, creative way to channel their energy during the long summer break.

🙌The sessions were funded through my engagement fund. Community groups can apply for grants of up to £5,000 to support events and activities that bring people together and make a positive difference in their area.

Newport-based Cynefin Pamoja has received funding from my office to support its work with primary schools in Gwent. The project delivers sessions on cultural identity, religious customs celebrated in Wales, and how children can seek help if they experience bullying or hatred.

The workshops are designed to help young people from different backgrounds better understand each other’s cultures, while giving them the confidence to raise issues that affect them.

They help young people to understand and respect each other’s cultures, while also recognising the shared values and sense of community that bring us together here in Gwent. They are building understanding and mutual respect, helping to create school communities where difference is valued, bullying and hatred are challenged, and every child feels able to belong.
