Henllys Community Council - Gwent Police meeting summary.

Henllys Community Council would like to thank officers from Gwent Police for attending May’s Full Council meeting to discuss local policing matters and hear about issues affecting residents in our community.

During the meeting, councillors raised concerns regarding the recent incident in Birch Grove car park, along with ongoing concerns from residents about vehicles speeding on residential roads throughout Henllys.

Regarding the Birch Grove incident, Cllr Burnett and Cllr Thomas have already liaised with the Community Safety team, and the Police Officer in attendance kindly offered to attend the site meeting they have arranged for early June.

The officers also committed to engaging with the GoSafe team to arrange for speed monitoring equipment to be deployed in the area. This exercise will help assess the extent of the issue and determine any appropriate next steps.

In the meantime, we would encourage all residents to drive safely, responsibly, and with consideration for others — particularly pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.

Thank you for your continued support in helping keep Henllys a safe community for everyone.

Henllys Community Council, in partnership with Torfaen Play, has been providing play provisions locally for a number of years. These play and activity opportunities support the recreational, social and emotional development of children and young people in the community.

We are committed to continuing this support for our younger residents with our partners at Torfaen Play, and we have been exploring ways the current offer might be maintained or potentially enhanced.

Current provision includes:
• Summer Play Scheme at Henllys School (half day) – average attendance 56 children
• After-school clubs at Henllys Village Hall (2 hours) – average attendance 31 children

We are now seeking the views of Henllys residents who have children aged 5–11 years, or whose children will soon be entering this age group, on possible future arrangements.

Proposal 1 – Maintain the current arrangements
• Summer Play Scheme at Henllys School (half day)
• After-school clubs at Henllys Village Hall (2 hours)
Choosing this option means the existing provision continues locally as it currently operates.

Proposal 2 – Expanded holiday provision at local schools
• Summer Play Scheme at other local schools (all day) with 80 spaces available
• Half-term play schemes at other local schools (all day) with 50 spaces available

This option would increase the number of available places and provide full-day holiday play opportunities, giving children more time for play, social interaction and structured activities while supporting families who may benefit from longer holiday provision.

We would be very grateful if you could take a moment to complete the poll, which will be posted shortly, and share your views.

Poll question:
Which option would you prefer for future play provision for children aged 5–14 in Henllys?

Poll options:
🔹 Proposal 1 – Keep the current arrangements (Henllys School summer play scheme + Village Hall after-school clubs)
🔹 Proposal 2 – Move to expanded all-day holiday play schemes at local schools

Please be assured that if any changes are made, they will not take effect during the current school year.

Your feedback will help ensure future play provision best supports the needs of children and families in Henllys.
