We’re sure you’ve heard about how far round an owl can turn its head, and most likely you’ll believe it’s a full 360° turn! However that is not the case…

Owls DO have increased flexibility in their neck, and the extent of their movement range can go up to 270°! This means an owl technically can have a full 360° view of their environment, just not in one single head turn!

This can be achieved thanks to the extra vertebrae in an owls neck, about 14, double the amount we have in ours! As well as that, there are extra reservoirs of blood that maintain a steady blood flow to their brains when rotated at these extensive angles, allowing owls to literally keep their heads on a swivel!

Lobelia, our young Eurasian Griffon Vulture, always wants to be involved in the cleaning of her aviary.

She’s very curious, yet cautious. Making her both sweet and playful!

Have you had to chance to see Lobelia fly yet? She’s coming on so so well and is learning quickly!

Taz our beautiful Eurasian Eagle Owl out on a recent flying session.

Taz is partially sighted and is trained to a specific routine to make navigation easier for her. It’s still important that despite her disability that she gets out to see the world and stretch her wings.

The Black-Chested Buzzard-Eagle, otherwise known as the Chilean Buzzard or Chilean Blue Eagle, is a South American bird of prey and a member of the Accipitridae family, including a variety of raptors, such as hawks, eagles and kites.

Their scientific name, Geranoaetus melanoleucus, indicate that they are not really categorised as true buzzards, as their name would suggest. Buzzards belong to the genus Buteo.

The Geranoaetus genus belongs to two other species, the White-Tailed Hawk (Geranoaetus albicaudatus) and the Variable Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma).

These birds will often prey on mammals species, like the European Rabbit, as well as birds, snakes and even carrion!

Here’s Dawn, one of our stunning Black-Chested Buzzard-Eagles, in the morning sun.

Not our usual type of post I’m aftaid. Does anyone recognise this scumbag or motorbike?

This person drove in to our carpark at 11am this morning and broke into a school mini bus. They stole 3 rucksacks that had house keys, car keys and more importantly, life saving medication belonging to a young girl.

It has been reported. We would really love it if you could share this post.

Raptors do not have sweat glands and this means that they must find other methods to help them stay cool in warm weather.

Panting is one of the best methods to lower a birds body temperature. By increasing the natural breathing rate, heat is lost through their respiratory tract.

Many birds of prey also have bare areas around the face and legs which help with heat loss and the feathers can be fluffed out from the body to help ventilate the body.

When it is hot, we ensure our more sensitive species are not flown at the hottest times of day, that all our birds have access to a nice cool bath, with the occasional misting and that they have plenty of access to shade.
