The Folklore Library and Archive is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the collection and preservation of folklore materials in all formats. We hold physical collections of national and international significance at our base in Devon, which can be visited for research access on request, and are striving to make as many of our resources freely availably digitally as possible.

Don't forget that this Friday evening is our next FOLKLORE FRIDAY social, when we will be having a guest talk on the subject of Holy Wells in Devon (and beyond) - their folklore, superstitions and history. Join us at Clover’s cafe in Crediton at 7pm.

Entry is FREE, with donations to support the charity welcome but not expected. A full cafe menu (including lovely COLD things) will be available ... and the weather should hopefully be more British by then!

If you can, book a free place at bit.ly/flaevents so we have a rough idea of numbers, or drop into Crediton Library and put your name on the list in there.

We've just added more second hand folklore books to our online bookshop, including these rare Hamish Hamilton titles.

All income from our second hand folklore titles goes directly to our charitable work, and we are adding loads more stock over the coming weeks.

Our next monthly in person event in Crediton is coming up on Friday 26th June, in Clover’s at 7pm as usual.

This month, the theme is Holy Wells and we will be welcoming special guest speaker Dr Dee Ross, who will shed light on some of the many wells found across Devon, and beyond.

Entry is free, with donations encouraged to support the work of the charity. To control numbers, please book places ahead if possible via bit.ly/flaevents or by emailing us at [email protected]

The countdown is on to our next online Zoom talk, on Saturday 27th June at 8pm via Zoom.

WHEN THE SPIRIT MOVES YOU: THE STRANGE HISTORY OF THE POLTERGEIST

This month, the guest speaker is Deborah Hyde, regular on Danny Robbins' UNCANNY and former editor of The Skeptic Magazine

Not content with mere visual manifestation, poltergeists are presences which interact with their environments. Making noises, hurling objects and causing levitation is sometimes just the start! This talk will go into the history of these manifestations to find a selection of clergymen, religious revolutionaries and malcontent teenagers.

We will be at the Exeter Unesco City of Literature Book Market today. Come and say hello. We will have a range of secondhand and new folklore books for sale as well as information about the charity and some objects and displays

We will be at the Boniface Bash in Crediton on Saturday where, in conjunction with The Turning Tides Project CIC and Crediton Town Council we will be leading the procession and well dressing.
