Human stories are invariably fascinating, but so often, the stories of the many are obscured by the stories of a few.

In her latest book, Witchland, the excellent Professor Marion Gibson delves into the lives of those who suffered in the witch hunts of the English Civil War in the 1600s. We've all heard of the self-styled Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins, but how many of his victims can we name?

In this compelling book, Professor Gibson's extensive research finally reclaims these victims' stories,. She brings to vivid life the people who, for centuries, have simply been, at most, names on a list.

Their stories are our stories.

The Folklore Library and Archive is delighted to be hosting an evening with Professor Gibson on Friday 11 September 2026 at 7.30pm, when she will share some of these fascinating insights into the lives of these unseen people. You will be able to purchase a copy of Witchland on the night (thanks to our local bookshop The Bookery, Crediton).

If you like a documentary, then the chances are you've seen Professor Marion Gibson on your TV as an expert commentator on the history of witchcraft more than once.

On Friday 11th September at 7.30pm, you can come and stare at her in person! Marion will be at the Boniface Centre, Crediton to talk about her new book WITCHLAND, which will also be available for signing.

The open sign is on the pavement and the kettle is on, which means our Friday volunteer has arrived at the Folklore Library.
