Flounders Folly Trust

Flounders’ Folly is an imposing stone landmark standing 80 feet above Callow Hill, near Craven Arms, Shropshire. It was built in 1838 by Benjamin Flounders.

🚩 Flags are flying at Flounders Folly! 🚩 = Doors open.

We’re throwing the gates open this Saturday 18th April, 10am–1pm, as the epic Shropshire Way 80K Festival Mammothon charges through!

A huge good luck to all the incredible participants—you’ve got this 💪 (and yes… the Folly will be open 😉).

For everyone else, why not make a morning of it? Wander up, soak in those unbeatable views, and cheer on the Mammothon heroes as they pass by.

Fresh air, big skies, and a brilliant atmosphere—what more could you want?

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🌿 The flag is up, the folly is open! 🌿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

We’re delighted to say that Flounders Folly will be open on Sunday 29th March 2026 from 🕰️11am to 4pm — just in time for the start of summertime.

As the clocks change, sunrise will appear to shift an hour later, so mornings may feel a little darker (we promise it’s not just you!). But brighter days are on their way, and there’s no better time to come and visit.

Come along, meet our wonderful volunteers, and soak up a bit of local history. We’d love to hear your thoughts on Benjamin Flounders too — especially when you compare his original portrait with our rather *modern update* 👀

We’re not saying Benjamin Flounders has a podcast… but if he was around today we would absolutely listen to it.

🌿🌟Bright & Breezy Day at Flounders Folly⛅️🍃
Yesterday brought mild air, blue skies and a good dose of wind - enough for the old flag to make what may well have been its final appearance! After a long and loyal service (despite already sporting a hole), it flew proudly one last time.
We were delighted to welcome 34 adults - including a wonderful group of 15 ramblers — plus 2 very well-behaved dogs and (for once!) no children. Charity money was kindly donated, thank you all for your generosity.
All routes up to the Folly are currently passable, though fair warning - it's very muddy
underfoot, so sturdy boots were the order of the
day!
A special mention must go to the hundreds of ladybirds who decided a rucksack (left innocently on a chair) was prime real estate.
One particularly determined guest even made it all the way home to our wonderful volunteer and appeared this morning... dedication!
Much appreciation to all of our wonderful volunteers we all really are grateful for the effort that goes into keeping the Folly open.
Thank you to everyone who visited. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

If the flag is up, we are open! 🚩

Join us at Flounders’ Folly this Sunday 22nd February, 11am–3pm. Our wonderful volunteers will be there to welcome you and share the magic of the Folly.

The forecast is looking optimistic, so dust off those walking shoes and make a day of it in beautiful South Shropshire. Come and breathe in everything the AONB has to offer — fresh air, big skies, and views that are well worth the climb.

Our volunteer steward Frank enjoyed a great day hosting visitors to the Folly on Sunday, with more than two dozen people making the walk up while the flag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿was flying. They included one group of around 12 students. Particular thanks to those who made donations towards upkeep of the tower. We're next due open on the last Sunday of February, 22nd, so see you then!😃

Flounders Folly open tomorrow (Sun, 24 Jan) 11am-3pm, thanks to our volunteer stewards. The weather's looking reasonable, so get a breath of fresh air by walking up to us! Entry to the tower is free, as always, although donations towards upkeep always appreciated! Limited parking on the Westhope-Dinchope lane at the Callow Hill forestry pull-in. Please don't block gateways. 🙂

Look out for the St George’s flag – it means the folly is open! Climb the 78 steps of this Grade II listed tower, built in 1838, and take in the stunning Shropshire views.

Come for the walk, stay for the views – and say hello to our amazing volunteers!

It'll be warm tomorrow (Sun, 29 June), but a good day for a gentle stroll to Flounders Folly. Our volunteer stewards plan to open the tower 11am-4pm so come on up and climb the tower for great views all round. Entry is free, as always, but donations towards upkeep are much appreciated.

Late May Bank Holiday coming up. Flounders Folly tower will be open by our volunteer stewards on Bank holiday Monday, May 26, 11am-4pm. Watch out for the flag on the tower! Admission as ever is free but donations towards maintenance are sincerely appreciated. We will not be open on Sunday May 25, so take a walk to enjoy the views on Monday May 26. See you then!
