Year 1 have been busy practising their fire-striking skills at Forest School. What looks like a simple task involves so much learning – developing hand-eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills, core strength, concentration, perseverance and risk assessment.

The children showed fantastic determination, progressing from making their very first spark to producing several sparks in a row. Some even managed to ignite their cotton wool!

This week, some of our Year 1 children had their first go at Nordic sling braiding. Using long strands weighted with pine cones, the children worked together, swinging and passing them in a repeated pattern to create a braid.

It was great fun, but there was lots of learning happening too. Nordic sling helps develop hand-eye coordination, rhythm and concentration, while the repeated movements encourage children to cross the midline – using both sides of their body together.

It also takes teamwork, communication and perseverance. The children had to watch each other carefully, find a shared rhythm and keep trying when it didn’t quite go to plan!

There was lots of fun at Forest School this morning, but behind the conker comets, Hapa Zome, bug hunting, den building and hot chocolate, there was so much learning happening. 🌿

Today we particularly noticed resilience and independence developing. Lots of children initially asked an adult for help before they had tried something themselves. We encouraged them to have a go, think about what they could do next and persevere when something didn’t work first time. The pride when they discovered “I can do it!” was wonderful to see.

We also saw teamwork and cooperation everywhere – sharing equipment, taking turns, helping friends, building together and listening to one another’s ideas.

Our hot-chocolate routine is a great example of how independence grows through repetition. Each week the children are taking on more of the process themselves: remembering what to do, pouring carefully, judging how much water they need and stirring independently.

Forest School gives children the time and space to try, make mistakes, problem-solve, persevere and help one another – skills that reach far beyond our Forest School site. 🌳
