I was pleased to be in attendance at today's inaugural meeting of the Mossmorran Taskforce which is being led by Fife Council, bringing together the Scottish and UK Governments, key partner agencies, ExonnMobil, employer representatives and the local community.
Firstly, it was reassuring to hear that ExonnMobil are continuing to provide comprehensive support to their employees and contractors during this time of uncertainty. Currently, I understand that one-to-one meetings are being held to discuss their individual circumstances and next steps, and I am thinking of all those impacted.
Next, turning to the local community, it was encouraging to hear from the company that talks are being held, at pace, with their senior leadership on the legacy that they will leave behind in the local area, and I expect to hear more on this in due course as concrete proposals develop.
The funding from the Scottish Government over the next three years was widely welcomed by all in attendance. However, I and others provided effective challenge to the UK Minister for Industry, Chris McDonald MP, on if, and when, the UK Government was going to put up cash for both the site and the local community. While an assurance was given of 'resource commitment', it was very light on detail.
Finally, I was pleased to hear that Scottish Enterprise and partners are working to market the site for potential future use and private sector investment. I used this as an opportunity to promote the sites potential for hydrogen production and will be closely monitoring developments over the coming weeks.
As ever, if you are a constituent that has been impacted by the closure of Mossmorran, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me directly at [email protected].
