Winning new housing development name competition: Ivy Grove

Our School Councillors took part in an exciting naming competition for a new housing
development in the local area, led by developer Persimmon Homes. After receiving a
fantastic range of creative applications, the winning name, submitted by Ava in Year 5,
Ivy Grove, was chosen for its strong sense of connection to our local area.

In recognition of the school council’s involvement, Ava, was awarded a £50 book
voucher, along with runners-up who were also praised for their imaginative
contributions with a £25 book voucher each. To celebrate our school’s involvement, a
£200 book voucher, was also generously awarded to further support reading and
learning for all our pupils.

A group of 12 Year 6 pupils, that do BCPS on Air, had an exciting visit to Vibe25 Radio in Hampton in Arden. Each group of 4, were taking it in turn by going live and to read the sports news and talk about SATs, they also interviewed Solihull Mayor, Cllr Annette MacKenzie. Whilst a group was live on the radio, the others spoke with Producer Kate about her role and, as part of the experience, the pupils designed own school radio logo, which will be featured on Vibe25’s website.
The visit has given our young podcasters the opportunity to practise their questioning and communication skills and thanks to a fantastic engaging afternoon by everyone at Vibe25 with a special shout out to Big Shorsey and Producer Kate, some of our podcasters might well see themselves studying media. We are all very grateful to have had this opportunity and experience of real broadcasting.
To top it all off, the unique goodie bags were a massive hit with everyone!

Year 1 went back in time before half term and enjoyed taking part in our 'Victorians Inspiration Day'. They all looked lovely, some were poor Victorians and some were rich! We all went outside and did some drills on the playground. The lessons focused on the 3Rs and they all did their best to avoid any punishments, especially the cane!

Volunteers Needed: Help Launch Junior parkrun in Balsall Common!
With the support of Parish Councils and local charities, it is planned to launch a Junior parkrun at Lavender Hall Park for 4–14 year olds this Summer — BUT a pool of volunteers is needed to be in place before they can secure approval with parkrun UK and finalise a start date. We know that many of our pupils love to run and we are reaching out to our school community for your support to help to make a parkrun in Balsall Common happen!
🏃 Support a fun 2km run for our local 4 – 14 years olds
📅 Volunteer roughly once every 3 weeks (flexible)
⏱ Just 45 minutes on a Sunday morning (from 08:45)
🙌 Roles include marshalling, timekeeping & results
No experience needed – full training provided. Parents, carers, grandparents or ANYONE can support the Balsall Common community to launch our very 1st parkrun.
To make a community difference, please contact Peter Wreford on: 07971 877965 or [email protected]

Our school fish aquarium is looking very lively now thanks to kind donations from our parent community.
Many thanks to the Woodruff family, Annabel 5C and Hugo 1R who donated colourful aquarium plants ornamental rock which has added lots of character and colour.
A big thank you to the Priestley family Emma 3P and Sophie RC who have donated many fish now from their aquarium. We were down to around 2 fish at one point so having so many now is such a nice change and very calming and relaxing for staff and pupils.
We would also like to thank Mr Bird for the addition of the Spongebob and Squidward house which causes so much excitement with the children. He is under pressure to try and find Patrick’s house now, fingers crossed.
