A few days ago we celebrated World Lake Day. Today, we remember the man responsible for the lake at Coombe Abbey Park - Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.
Brown was baptised on this date, 30th August, in 1716 in Kirkharle, Northumberland. There are no records that show his exact date of birth, but that is expected to have been in earlier that same year.
In 1771 the 6th Baron Craven commissioned Capability Brown to modernise the landscape around the former Cistercian monastery at Coombe Abbey. Brown swept away the elaborate Elizabethan gardens and landscaped the park to create a serpentine lake, sweeping views and extensive new planting.
Working with architect Henry Holland Junior, his son-in-law, Brown also designed several buildings, including a boathouse, menagerie and lodge gates.
It wasn't just Coombe Abbey that Capability Brown changed. He worked on over 250 large country estates throughout England and Wales.
He got his 'Capability' nickname because he said that places had great "capabilities".
You can take the ‘Discover Capability Brown’ walking trail across the Old Deer Park. It’s 2.5 miles long and takes you past several information panels where you can learn more about his work at Coombe Abbey and see points of historical interest.
The Discovery Centre inside the Visitor Centre tells visitors about Capability Brown and how the landscape of the park has changed over the centuries.
