When a major incident unfolds, like a terrorist attack, a building fire, or a severe weather emergency, the public looks to the police to respond with courage, speed and skill.
We’ve published new authorised professional practice (APP) on emergency procedures: initial response and command, providing clear guidance for police forces across England and Wales to prepare for, respond to and recover from major incidents.
Supporting officers and staff across all ranks and roles, the guidance covers planning and preparedness, incident command, communications, multi-agency working and learning from incidents once they are over.
Reflecting lessons from major incidents and public inquiries, including the Manchester Arena bombing, Grenfell Tower disaster and the Southport attacks, it helps drive consistent standards and continuous improvement.
The guidance also recognises the impact that emergencies and major incidents can have on officers and staff, signposting support available through Oscar Kilo UK, the National Police Wellbeing Service.
