A huge congratulations to our latest DAISY Award winners, Ward 14! 💚

Part of their nomination read:
“The children and young people this team support often have complex backgrounds and present in mental health, emotional and social care crisis.

“At times some of our young people experience distressing dysregulation, the level of compassion and connections this team provide to support our children during this is outstanding.

“They connect with our Children and Young People and provide true personalised care to meet their likes and dislikes, taking time to really understand the background of each patient, even down to getting favourite foods (jacket potato, plain with salt and pepper and Percy Pigs!) and toiletries, braiding hair, providing a mini spa session, creating distraction activities to make each child feel seen, heard and supported at some of the worst points in their life.

“I am so proud of the commitment and trauma informed care that this team provide, I could not be prouder of them and all they do for our patients and their families day after day. “

Cervical screening is one of the best ways to protect yourself from cervical cancer, so it’s important to take up your invitation when it arrives. 💌

If you’ve missed your cervical screening, the NHS may invite you to take an HPV self-test instead. If invited, you can order a kit, take your sample at home or somewhere private, and return it free by post.

You can’t opt in to HPV self-testing – if you’re eligible, the NHS will contact you.

When 33-year-old Cameron Mair suffered a cardiac arrest, quick-thinking members of the public helped to save his life by starting CPR.

Now, Cameron has become the first patient at UHCW to receive a new type of implantable defibrillator, offering extra protection from life-threatening heart rhythms.

This first-of-its-kind procedure at UHCW is another example of our specialist teams working together to bring innovative treatments to our patients.

“I couldn’t ask for a better team that’s looked after me,” said Cameron. “It’s been a lot to take in, but it’s all been worth it.”

It’s Sickle Cell Awareness Month 🩸

Anyone can have sickle cell, but it most commonly affects people from Black African or Black Caribbean backgrounds.

Every day, people living with sickle cell rely on blood transfusions to stay alive. For many, regular transfusions every 4 to 6 weeks, or monthly red cell exchanges, are the only way to manage painful symptoms.

For the safest treatment, patients need blood that’s very closely matched - often from a donor of the same ethnicity.

Our Macmillan Cancer Information Centre at University Hospital Coventry is here for anyone affected by cancer, including family, friends, and carers.

They offer support, information, and courses such as the HOPE course (Helping Overcome Problems Effectively), allowing you to get on with life as best as possible.

For your support and information needs as well as accessing these courses please call our team on 024 7696 6052 or find them at the centre in the main entrance. They are open from Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.
