I would like to encourage all our LinkedIn followers to click on the link above. This is a statement from Chief Officer Stuart Stevens KFSM of Scottish Fire and Rescue. Many of his views, mirror my own posts on social media platforms and the articles I write and publish in industry journals.

A familiar question of ‘who owns the risk for wildfires’ has been raised several times on platforms such as LinkedIn, and I can read some of the frustrations that filters through from the Fire Chiefs statements. I share the same frustrations. Wildfire resilience cannot rest solely with Fire & Rescue Services. It requires a coordinated approach between government, emergency services, landowners, environmental organisations, infrastructure providers, industry and local communities. It must also include an individual’s responsibility to protect their environment from fire.

It goes without saying that there are many lessons that can be learnt from the many hundreds of wildfires we have experienced in the UK over the past two years. Perhaps the greatest lesson is that we need to move beyond simply counting the number of fires and focus more closely on a strategic approach that involves the interested parties already mentioned. The science and recent data, doesn't lie. In a very short space of time, our climate in the UK is becoming more Mediterranean, and a new approach is required with some urgency. This is a hugely important discussion and one that I believe needs to happen at both a local and national level without delay. If you will pardon the metaphor, this is not a subject that can be kicked into the long grass. It is crucial that our country is prepared for what is to come in the years ahead.

As the Managing Director of a commercial operation, we can only share our experience and expertise in this field, and trust that this knowledge can help inform those responsible for such a strategic plan. If one runs a car without proper maintenance, when it breaks, it becomes more expensive to repair. National government will not want to hear that agencies and service providers are under resourced, but that is where we are today. It is not that government has not made investment in the past, but our natural environment is changing quickly, and we need to address the question of a national resilience that can meet this increasing risk. We ask our firefighters to face these risks on our behalf, the least we can do as a society, is to support them with the resources they need to the job we are asking them to do.

As one of the leading manufacturers of firefighting products in the UK, we will continue to work closely with all interested parties to ensure we are part of the answer in dealing with the risk of wildfires. To that end, in April this year, we placed contingency stocks of FREEFOR SF2 wetting agent with partners around the UK including Glasgow, to support FRSs with a vital tool to reduce water usage and prevent wildfire reignition.

If we are serious about learning lessons from wildfire response, we should look to UK Fire and Rescue Services in Wales, Northern Ireland, the Midlands, the East, the South West and the South East, as well as our European neighbours in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece and Germany. Wetting agents are already a vital part of their wildfire strategies. Organisations with strong environmental awareness are doing all they can to protect and preserve the environment, using every effective tool available. Let us work together to understand the problem and fix it.

🎓 Parents of First-Year University Students & Students Returning to Campus. This Message is for You.

Whether it's your son or daughter leaving home for the very first time, or a student returning to university accommodation, please remind them of the fire risks that can be lurking in their room every single day.
Yes, you'll probably be met with an eye roll, or hear, "I know. I'm not dumb." But by having that conversation, you've made fire safety fresh in their mind. You may have encouraged them to spend an extra five minutes checking their surroundings before they head out.
Those five minutes could save lives.

At 3FFF Limited, we're committed to developing innovative firefighting technologies, but we believe education & prevention will always be the first line of defence against fire. Community safety is every bit as important to us as our Research & Development.
Lithium-ion batteries power almost everything students take to university mobile phones, laptops, tablets, power banks, e-cigarettes, e-bikes & e-scooters. While these devices are generally safe when used correctly, damaged batteries, poor-quality chargers or incorrect charging practices can lead to thermal runaway, producing intense fires that develop in seconds.

In the UK, fire & rescue services have reported a sharp increase in lithium-ion battery fires in recent years, particularly involving e-bikes, e-scooters & disposable vapes. Incorrect charging & the unsafe disposal of lithium batteries are becoming an increasing cause of fires in homes, student accommodation, refuse collection vehicles & recycling centres.

Before leaving the room, encourage them to spend five minutes checking:
✔ Charging cables for fraying, exposed wires or loose connections.
✔ Batteries & devices for swelling, cracks, overheating or unusual smells.
✔ They're using the manufacturer's recommended charger.
✔ Devices are charging on a hard, well-ventilated surface not on a bed, sofa or under bedding or clothes.
✔ All charging devices are switched off before leaving the room or going to sleep.
✔ Extension leads and multi-plug adapters are not overloaded.
And don't forget...
❌ Never dispose of disposable vapes or lithium-ion batteries in general waste bins. They should always be recycled at designated collection points.
❌ Never continue using a battery that has been dropped, damaged or shows signs of overheating.
☀ One final summer safety reminder: Move mirrors, magnifying glasses & other reflective objects away from direct sunlight. Concentrated sunlight can ignite combustible materials in surprisingly little time.

💧 THE UK’S DROUGHT SITUATION: EVERY LITRE MATTERS 🔥🚒

As highlighted in 3FFF Limited’s article “A Vital tool For The UK Fire and Rescue Services” published in the September 2025 edition of International Fire Fighter magazine, and our recent article, “High Temperature Alert – Where Has Our Water Gone?”, published in UK Fire magazine this month (August 2026), this is not a new concern for the fire industry it is an ever-growing challenge that requires greater attention and action.

Water availability, water security and the ability of Fire & Rescue Services to access the substantial volumes required for firefighting have been growing concerns for some time. As drought conditions continue to place increasing pressure on the UK’s water resources, the need to address these challenges is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Water availability, security and the ability of Fire & Rescue Services to access the volumes required for firefighting are issues that have been developing for some time and, as drought conditions continue to place pressure on the UK’s water resources, are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

The government itself recognises the importance of this issue. Environment Agency drought guidance specifically identifies that Fire & Rescue Services must have access to water for firefighting, particularly during periods of prolonged dry weather when water is scarcer and wildfire risk is significantly greater. It also states that water companies should have specific plans with Fire & Rescue Services to help ensure water is available for firefighting purposes during drought conditions.

The latest drought updates make one thing increasingly clear: our water resources cannot be taken for granted.

While rainfall may provide temporary relief in some areas, the prolonged dry conditions experienced since last year have demonstrated just how vulnerable reservoirs, rivers and groundwater supplies can become. In 2025, England experienced its driest spring since 1893, followed by its hottest summer on record, with nearly 9 million people covered by hosepipe bans and 996 wildfires attended by Fire & Rescue Services in England and Wales by early September.

For households, water shortages can mean restrictions and increasing pressure on already stretched budgets. But for the Fire & Rescue Services, it raises another critical operational challenge:
How do we continue to protect life, property and communities when major incidents can require hundreds of thousands of litres of water?

🔥 Wildfires in 2026: Are We Seeing a Pattern for the Future?

Wildfires across the UK and Europe this year are stirring important conversations not only about why fires are becoming more frequent and severe, but about what we should expect in the years ahead.
