XI Squadron at RAF Coningsby have said goodbye to a United States Air Force exchange pilot who has served with the Squadron for three years.
Following his final flight with the Squadron he was met by his family, and Station Commander, Group Captain Andy Hampshire.
Lt Colonel Nugent said: “It was a special moment to see my family waiting as I taxied in for the last time in an RAF Typhoon. Having the Station Commander there to mark the occasion made it even more memorable.
As I return to the United States, I’ll reflect with great pride on my time with XI(F) Squadron and the RAF. I have been continually impressed by the RAF’s ability to project air power around the globe. During my exchange we deployed to the Middle East on operations, the Far East, and the United States for training exercises, while also operating alongside allies across Europe. It’s remarkable to think that I flew west from the UK to California and east from the UK all the way to Australia in the same aircraft type—a testament to the Typhoon’s global reach and the RAF’s expeditionary capability.
More importantly, this exchange has been a perfect example of the enduring special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States. Serving alongside RAF personnel has reinforced just how closely our nations operate together, not only as allies but as trusted friends. I’ve had the privilege of working with outstanding professionals, made lifelong friendships, and the experience has been one of the most rewarding of my career.”
Group Captain Hampshire said: "I’m delighted to celebrate with Lt Colonel Nugent today as he completes his tour. As an operational pilot with the RAF he richly deserves my thanks, as do all the pilots, engineers, and supporting personnel who put themselves in harm’s way on our behalf. It’s also great to recognise and celebrate our relationship with the US Air Force, they remain our firm allies. I wish him and his family all the best as they return to the US."
