Did you know that some slush ice drinks or ‘slushies’ can be dangerous for young children?

Slush ice drinks may contain glycerol, an ingredient used in place of sugar.
If young children consume large quantities of glycerol it can cause sickness and headaches, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), shock and loss of consciousness.

We advise that slush ice drinks containing glycerol shouldn’t be consumed by children under 7. Children under 10 should only have one 350ml drink - that’s about the size of a fizzy drink can.

Check with the seller about the drink’s glycerol content – don’t buy if in doubt.

For more information about our guidance on iced slush drinks visit: https://www.food.gov.uk/glycerol

It's Allergy awareness week! We're focusing on the importance of clear allergen labelling and safe food practices, especially for those navigating food allergies. 🚫🍴

🔎 Key Points:

Prepacked Foods: Look for labels that clearly emphasise the 14 main allergens (e.g. in bold or coloured text).

Loose Foods: When purchasing from bakeries, butchers, or delis, allergen information should be readily available. This can be provided in written form or verbally, with clear signposting on how to obtain this information.

PPDS (Prepacked for Direct Sale) Foods: Foods prepacked for direct sale must now include a full ingredients list with allergens emphasised.

Eating Out: Review the menu and speak to staff about your dietary needs. This ensures they are aware of your allergies to avoid cross-contact with allergens during food preparation.

And remember, if you notice a business not following these requirements we recommend discussing them directly with the FBO (Food Business Operator) first. If your concerns are not addressed satisfactorily, please reach out to the food safety team of the local authority where the business is located via food.gov.uk/contact/consumers/find-details/contact-a-local-food-safety-team.
