Our final announcement for this years Coleford Festival of Brass!

Immediately following the 17 individual performances across the two venues of Coleford Clock Tower and Coleford Baptist Church, there will be a massed band performance on the Clock Tower stage featuring members from as many of the 9 Forest of Dean bands as possible, under the musical direction of Philip Harper.

"Philip Harper became Musical Director of the Cory Band in 2012. Since then he has won all the major trophies many times, including an unprecedented Grand Slam of major titles in 2016, repeated in 2019: the European, the British Open, the Nationals and Brass in Concert, all won in a single calendar year. Philip won the coveted 4barsrest.com Conductor of the Year Award in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2020. In recent years he was a guest conductor of the Manger Musikklag Band in Norway, the National Youth Brass Bands of Great Britain, Switzerland, Wales and The Netherlands, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Symphonic Brass, amongst many others. In 2021 he was awarded the Iles Medal by the Worshipful Company of Musicians for his services to brass bands, and in 2023 was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

A resident of Gloucester, Philip was the Editor of Brass Band World magazine between 2009 and 2015 and, since 2005 has been the Music Editor of the historic Wright and Round publishing company.

Philip is a prolific composer and his original works and arrangements are played all over the world. In 2016 he composed A Shakespearean Triptych for a 650-strong joint ensemble and choir conducting the first performance in a packed Royal Albert Hall at the Last Night of the Schools Prom."

The mass band performance is at 730pm.

Our final band introduction for this years Coleford Festival of Brass is Forest of Dean Brass who will perform on the Clock Tower stage at 1:40pm and in Coleford Baptist Church at 3pm.

"Under the leadership of our Musical Director, Martyn Patterson, Forest of Dean Brass Band is a First-Section competing brass band based in the village of Yorkley, Gloucestershire, rehearsing twice weekly on Monday and Thursday, 7.45pm–9.45pm.

The band was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of two bands — Yorkley Onward Band and Coleford Town Band.

The band plays a wide variety of music — from classical to contemporary — and aims to serve both as a competitive contesting band and as a community band available for concerts, celebrations and events in the Forest of Dean region and beyond. Their versatility means they may perform traditional brass-band fare but also more accessible and contemporary pieces when playing for concerts or community events.

The band is once again very much looking forward to being part of the Coleford Festival of Brass 2026."

Today we introduce to you Lydbrook Band who will be performing at 550pm on the Clock Tower stage. The Lydbrook Training Band will also be performing and you can see them at 345pm at the Coleford Baptist Church.

"Lydbrook Band are looking forward to the summer months playing in and around the community and are very grateful to Coleford Town Council for once again giving us the opportunity to play at the Coleford Festival of Brass. The band always keeps busy and there never seems to be a quiet period. It’s probably because we have a very successful training band as well that are often seen and heard performing at local fund-raising events for other organisations and charities.

The Training band will be playing in the Baptist Church today if you would like to listen to them. At the moment, we are raising funds to build our new Band Rehearsal Room and Community Hall in Lydbrook - if you would like to help us with a donation, to provide facilities for future generations, you can do this on the band’s Crowdfunding Page. Keep in touch with Lydbrook Band at www.lydbrookband.co.uk"

We are delighted that we will be joined again this year by the Lydney Town Band and also their training band.

"Lydney Town Band is proud to be part of the rich history and tradition of brass banding within the Forest of Dean. Since January 2026, we have competed in the Second Section of the West of England region, and we are the current Wychavon Festival of Brass Third Section Champions. Our Musical Director, Thomas Dunne, was appointed in 2020.

Lydney Training Band was established in the mid-2000s to encourage and develop the next generation of brass musicians within the Forest of Dean. Today, the band is one of Gloucestershire’s most successful youth bands. We provide a supportive environment where aspiring new musicians of all ages can learn and develop their musical abilities. The band performs at a range of events throughout the year including public concerts, civic celebrations and entertainment contests. Lydney Training Band is conducted by Kevin Ford."

Lydney Town Band will perform at 130pm in the Coleford Baptist Church and the Training Band will perform at 320pm on the Clock Tower stage.

Our next band introduction is for Cinderford Band & Academy Band who will perform at 12 noon in Coleford Baptist Church and then at 230pm on the Clock Tower stage in the centre of town.

"The Cinderford Band was formed in 1879 and is proud to have given a service of music to the community in Cinderford and wide Forest of Dean for nearly 150 years. History and traditions of the band very often have shown repeated involvement of families in our music making, so our band naturally has a strong band ‘family feel’ in all we do.

Under the leadership of our MD Steve Kane, Cinderford Band currently compete in the Second Section and provide a wide range of concerts and programmes in different settings each year. This ranges from bandstand performances through to tailored events for retirement villages and other community outlets. The Band recently enjoyed success at the 2025 Wychavon Festival of Brass finishing in second place in their section.

We have an active learners and Academy Band under the leadership of MD Joey Prescott which aims to develop brass playing skills amongst both adults and children - and also contribute to music making in our local area."
