RECCE | STRIKE | GROUP

Exercise CYPHER ATHENA is a regimental activity designed to develop and refine the Recce Strike Group.

In simple terms, Recce Strike is about finding targets at range, hitting them quickly and accurately to create an unfair fight for any adversary. The aim is to reduce the time between spotting a threat and dealing with it, using the best available tools.

Ex CA26 develops this capability further through integration in training the whole system with Elbit Systems UK, linking JFST, IIDFS and ICAVSD. This improves how regiment train as a complete unit with integrated cells from across 16 Brigade.

The exercise also brings together personnel from across the 1XX Fires community, including 4th Regiment Royal Artillery and 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, strengthening how different units work together.

AIR | MANOEUVRE | FIRES

Air Manoeuvre enables combat power to be projected rapidly by air, placing troops, equipment and effects where they are required at speed. For the Royal Artillery, this requires the ability to move, land, establish command and control, and deliver accurate fires in support of the ground force.

This was demonstrated by G Battery, deploying from Merville Barracks to Wattisham Airfield within 24 hours as part of a readiness activation. On arrival, the Battery moved into preparation and rehearsals, including the use of mock trainers at Woodbridge, ensuring each element was ready for the final tactical phase.

The exercise concluded with the deployment of a Recce, Command Post and Gun by Rapid Air Landing onto Sculthorpe Airfield by night. Once on the ground, the detachment moved immediately into a fire mission, demonstrating the speed, discipline and integration required to support Air Manoeuvre.

BEYOND | SERVICE

Deployment is more than training for operations. Wherever the Regiment deploys, it becomes part of the local community. In Kenya, soldiers have been working alongside local partners to renovate and paint a school, improving facilities for the children who use it every day. These moments away matter. They reinforce the values of service and professionalism that define the Regiment, while allowing soldiers to contribute positively to the communities that host us.

Equally important is the opportunity to build resilience and morale through Adventure Training. From demanding exercises on the gun line to white-water rafting on Kenya’s rivers, these activities challenge soldiers physically and mentally, strengthening teamwork and trust across the Regiment. The balance of operational training, community engagement and adventure ensures soldiers remain motivated, cohesive and ready for high-readiness tasks.

For those considering a career in the Royal Artillery, this is part of the experience. Operational deployments, opportunities to support communities around the world, and adventure training that pushes you beyond your limits.

If you are leaving Phase 2 training, looking to rejoin, or considering a PPP from another unit, the Regiment offers a career that goes far beyond the gun line.

A look back to the 1990s and early 2000s. Airborne gunners operating in classic DPM and junglies, shared by former members of the Regiment.

Different kit and equipment to today, but the same standards and professionalism on exercise and deployment. From gun training and field exercises to parachute operations, the Regiment maintained its readiness to deploy wherever required.

These photos are a reminder that the reputation of the Regiment has been built over decades by those who served before us, setting the standard that continues today.

INTO | THE | BROTHERHOOD

Five members of the Regiment have successfully passed P Company, meeting the standard required to serve as Airborne Gunners.

Their success reflects the ethos of the Regiment and the preparation that precedes selection. The Unit Conditioning Course and ADT progressively develop the physical robustness, resilience and teamwork required to endure Test Week. By the time soldiers arrive at P Company they have already been prepared for the standard expected, and these five have proven themselves capable of meeting it.

Having passed P Company, they now await their parachute jumps before joining the Regiment in support of the Air Manoeuvre Battlegroup under 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team.

For those completing Phase 2 training, former soldiers considering rejoining, or gunners across the Royal Artillery looking to pursue a PPP to the Regiment, opportunities remain open to serve as an Airborne Gunner.
