As a collective groan not heard since I last set my students an essay rings out, I am afraid the subject of governance reforms, whilst unexciting, is far too important to leave undiscussed. In Dorothy Thornhill’s recent article, she sets out the importance of having a more agile organisation and e...

We have been inundated with requests from generous residents across Essex wishing to donate items and clothes to individuals arriving from Afghanistan.

Following an outpouring of support from residents across Essex, more donation points have now been set-up for anyone wishing to donate essential items or clean clothes to help individuals arriving from Afghanistan.

We have seen an incredible response from communities to date and we continue to be inundated with calls and messages from people looking for opportunities to give what they can to support those arriving in the county.

As individuals and families have arrived in Essex, local authority, NHS and voluntary organisations have quickly put in place support to address their immediate health and welfare needs.

In light of so many people wishing to make a positive contribution in any way they can to help others, community donation points are now also available at the following locations and times:

• Community 360, Winsley’s House, High Street, Colchester, Essex, CO1 1UG
• Chelmsford Community Resilience Hub – please call 01245 280731
• Hamptons Sports and Leisure Centre, Tydemans, Great Baddow, Chelmsford, CM2 9FH - 26 and 27 Aug 1-3pm
• Uttlesford Community Hub, 45 Stortford Road, Great Dunmow, Essex, CM6 1DQ – Monday to Friday 9.30-4.30
• Touchpoint Day Centre, Crafton Green House, Chapel Hill, Stansted CM24 8AB - Wednesday 9am-1pm, Thursday 9.30am-4.30pm

Alex Cole-Hamilton has tonight announced he is standing to be Scottish Lib Dem leader. The contest is taking place after Willie Rennie announced he was standing down two weeks ago. Alex throwing his hat into the ring is the most surprising thing since the sun rose in the east this morning. He announ...

I used to work at a University Law Clinic. One day two of us were deployed to assist with the defence of a group of Extinction Rebellion activists who had been arrested by the Police. During evidence, there was a fascinating video played, where the police warned protesters that they had 2 minutes to...

I have been a bit worried of late that the Lib Dems, at least in England, have been a bit bland and have been pulling the punches they should have landed. Well, credit where it’s due. After the utterly disgraceful scenes on Clapham Common tonight, Alistair Carmichael, Luisa Porritt and Ed Davey ha...

Over the past few months, I’ve been working with Lord John Bird and the Big Issue Magazine on the “Future Generations Bill”

We’re on to redrafting stage and today we’re tackling impact assessments!

Some of the issues I’ve advocated for include:

- Statutory underpinning for future impact assessments (consequences for actions).

- extension of the bill to cover public
procurement and an accreditation system for private sector bidders.

- Secondary legislation stemming from the bill to include clear sanctions for public bodies failing to comply.
