Brentwood cadets were very busy this Armed Forces Day, with flights attending three different events across Brentwood & Essex Wing Air Cadets

The majority of our squadron were on parade, together with the rest of Essex Wing, at Basildon, for a church service and inspection by the Mayor. We also joined the Brentwood Essex Royal British Legion along with other members of our community at Brentwood Chapel Ruins, for their Annual Armed Forces Day service, appreciating the commitment of our local armed forces.

As Mayor’s Cadet, FS McGlone attended a service at Brentwood Town Hall, joining the Mayor of Brentwood, Cllr Mark Haigh in raising the Armed Forces Day flag. “The ceremony of raising the flag signifies the great respect and appreciation for our Armed Forces… we pay tribute to the unwavering courage and commitment of our servicemen and women.”

How great does the new plastic-free poppy look?

Made from 100% paper, the new poppy will be available for this year's Poppy Appeal and we can’t wait to see it being worn with pride from October.

We’ve had lots of questions about our existing stock of poppies containing plastic.

To minimise waste - and so you can grab one as a memento! - they will still be available this year, alongside the new design, and can be returned to Sainsbury's stores for recycling.

We’d love to hear what you think of our new design ⬇️

Happy birthday to Hazel MacLennan who worked as an engineer during WW2 and celebrated her 100th birthday this week. 🎂

As the second world war broke out, she became one of the first young women to gain employment as an engineer on the factory floor at James Howden’s engineering works.

During her time there she dealt with a range of aircraft including Sunderland Flying Boats and fins and ailerons for Lancaster Bombers.

“I distinctly remember the night of the Clydebank bombing.

"I spent the night perched on top of a jig, watching terrified as German planes flew overhead", she said.

We thank you for your hard work during the war Hazel, we are so pleased you had a very special day.

Do you know someone who’s lifelong service has played a huge part in our first 100 years and given so much to your community? Please make sure that no Legion hero goes unrecognised and is commemorated by telling their story.
