📢📢 Colchester Conservatives shout for ALL scheduled local elections to go ahead in May 2026🗳🗳
Colchester City Conservatives, supported by Colchester Conservative Association are submitting a motion to Full Council on Thursday December 4th that May's scheduled local elections MUST go ahead.
This motion asks the Lib Dem and Labour Leadership of the City Council to back our written request to the Labour Secretary of State that the view from Colchester residents and us is that May 26 elections MUST all go ahead, not just in Colchester and Essex, but across the UK.
The power to postpone or force elections to go ahead is entirely the UK Government decision. Postponing democracry again would be unprecedented and has only been used at times when the whole Country faced national crisis, such as the Covid pandemic and WWII.
The meeting and vote will take place on the evening of Thursday December 4 at Colchester Town Hall. Further, information will be uploaded (hopefully 🤞🤞) shortly by the City Council to allow you all an oppurtunity see our motion and allow those of you that want to 'Have your say' on the night to attend
Let's see if the Lib Dems and Labour Councillors join us in passing this motion and ensure in May 26 we get to vote locally, countywide, in addition to the Essex Mayorality elections that are scheduled.
Bring on a 'Super Democracy Thursday' in May 26 🗳🗳
Colchester City Conservatives: all scheduled May 2026 local elections must go ahead.
Conservative Councillors on Colchester City Council will make it clear that in their view all scheduled Local Elections in May 2026 must go ahead by submitting a motion which all Councillors will be able to vote on when the Council meets on Thursday December 4th.
Cllr Paul Dundas (Tiptree), Leader of the Conservative Group, who will table the motion, said “We are submitting a clear and unambiguous statement that all elections due in May 2026 must go ahead which every Councillor present can either agree or disagree with by voting for or against. Voters are telling us they expect all the elections to go ahead as planned and it is important they know whether each political party agrees with that or not. On December 4 all Councillors will have the opportunity to put their view on the record”
“To be clear, no Council in Essex or elsewhere in the country has the power to either cancel elections or force them to go ahead. Only the Government can decide that so our motion asks the Leader of the Council, co-signed by all political parties, to inform the Secretary of State that the view in Colchester is that they should all go ahead, not just in Colchester and Essex, but across the UK"
“We understand the arguments, but it is a matter of principle. Extensions to elected terms for more than a year are virtually unprecedented outside times of national crisis. Elections must take place when they are due, and the public have the right to expect their elected representatives to firmly back that.”
Cllr Sara Naylor (Lexden and Braiswick), Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group who has seconded the motion said “It’s a fundamental principle of democracy that residents in Colchester, the surrounding villages and the County have the right to choose who represents them. The government must never misuse its power by denying our right to choose who represents us on our local councils.”
The meeting and vote will take place on the evening of Thursday December 4 at Colchester Town Hall.
