Cumberland Libraries are calling on young volunteers aged 14 to 24 to become Reading Champions and help bring this yearโ€™s Summer Reading Challenge to life across our libraries.

Itโ€™s a fantastic opportunity to:
โœ… Build confidence and communication skills
โœ… Gain experience working with children
โœ… Support your Duke of Edinburgh Award (or similar programmes)
โœ… Be part of a fun, supportive team

Volunteers will help children discover the joy of reading, chat about books and support activities in libraries over the summer holidays. Full training will be provided.

Make a splash this school holidays! ๐Ÿ’ฆ

All schoolchildren aged up to 16 years old from the Cumberland area can go for a swim for only 10p over the May half-term holidays.

The discounted scheme has been put in place by Cumberland Council, with the support of Everyone Active, GLL and Wigton Baths Trust.

It is available at Cockermouth Leisure Centre, Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre (Whitehaven), The Sands Leisure Centre (Carlisle), Wigton Baths Trust and Workington Leisure Centre.

At this eveningโ€™s Annual Meeting of Cockermouth Town Council, Cllr Julie Laidlow was elected as Mayor of Cockermouth for the forthcoming year, with Cllr Stephen Barnes elected as Deputy Mayor.

The Mayor has appointed Cllr Isabel Burns as her Consort for the year ahead. Congratulations to them all ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

Tonight, the Mayor of Cockermouth, Cllr David Malloy proudly presented his Mayorโ€™s Awards in recognition of outstanding achievement. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ†

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2026 Mayorโ€™s Awards:

๐Ÿ‘ Community Champion Award โ€“ Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team
โญ Unsung Hero Award โ€“ Sean Marsh

During the evening, the Mayor also presented donations of ยฃ700 each to his chosen charities, Cockermouth Linking Lives and the Europe Prize Scholarship Fund. These funds were raised throughout his mayoral year in support of the fantastic work both organisations do within the community.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

The Mayor also presented flowers to the Town Clerk โ€“ Jane Ollerenshaw, Assistant Town Clerk โ€“ Amy Jeffrey, and Events and Facilities Support โ€“ Jo-Anne Wood, in recognition of their continued hard work and support throughout the year. ๐ŸŒธ

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the Mayor and our community during his mayoral year.

The agenda for the next Town Council meeting is now available.

This meeting will include the Annual Town Council Meeting and Mayor Making Ceremony.

From 6.30pm, the Mayor will present cheques to his chosen charities and recognise members of the community with awards. Members of the public are welcome to attend this part of the evening ahead of the formal meeting.

The formal meeting will then begin as usual:

*URGENT ROAD CLOSURE*

An urgent road closure has been put in place to allow Electricity North West to carry out urgent utility works.

This notice will be in force for a period not exceeding 5 days from 26th May 2026. It is expected that the Works will take 5 days.

Location: U2381, Limetree Crescent, Cockermouth, from a point outside the property number 26 Limetree Crescent, extending in a south easterly direction for a distance of approximately 10 metres, as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.

Alternative Route: via the unrestricted sections of Limetree Crescent and a way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.
