๐Ÿšจ RIVER TAWE INCIDENT UPDATE ๐Ÿšจ

Last week, after seeing a growing number of reports of children becoming unwell after swimming in the River Tawe near Clydach, I immediately issued a notice advising that all river swimming should stop until we know more.

๐Ÿ’ง I contacted:

โœ… Swansea Council's Environmental Health Team
โœ… Dลตr Cymru Welsh Water
โœ… Natural Resources Wales (NRW)

NRW advised that because this stretch of river is not designated bathing water, it is not routinely monitored under Bathing Water Regulations. They stated that responsibility for this incident rests with Public Health Wales.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ The issue has now been raised in the Senedd by Rebecca Phillips MS, and the First Minister has committed to looking into the matter.
Today, I have emailed Senedd Members calling for immediate testing of the River Tawe. If this cannot be carried out urgently by the relevant authorities, I have suggested that independent testing be commissioned through a private company, with the costs recovered from NRW's budget.

โš ๏ธ There are also serious questions that need answering regarding sewage discharges into our rivers.

๐ŸŒฟ It is important to remember that an algae bloom is another possible cause. These can occur during periods of hot weather and can pose a significant risk to both people and animals.
Whatever the cause, we need answers. Our rivers should be safe for: ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Families ๐ŸŠ Swimmers ๐Ÿ• Dogs ๐Ÿฆ† Wildlife

Playing safely in our rivers is part of growing up and enjoying the wonderful natural environment we are fortunate to have here in the Swansea Valley.

๐Ÿ“ข I will continue to provide updates as information becomes available and look forward to meeting with Senedd Members, NRW and Public Health Wales representatives to ensure this matter is properly investigated.

Please continue to avoid swimming in the affected area until further notice and share this post so as many people as possible are aware.
