Looking for a foraging course? We have two courses soon in our sister forests Ennerdale & High Stand (near Carlisle).

The courses are led by the talented people at Wild Food UK. The course includes a guided walk through the woodlands, stopping to collect and talk about the food available.

It also includes a tasty meal, a selection of foraged homemade treats created by your instructor, and a dish made with ingredients collected during the walk.

As part of the Coast to Coast improvements, the Lake District National Park has installed a new bridge across Loft Beck, making the crossing easier and safer during periods of high rainfall.

Working alongside the Wild Ennerdale partnership, a light-touch metal structure was designed to minimise its impact on this otherwise wild landscape while improving access for walkers.

Really grateful to the National Trust for spotlighting Wild Ennerdale with such a lovely photo in their latest members’ email. Ennerdale’s meadows are full of colour, and our Reflowering Wild Ennerdale project is all about restoring the wildflowers that once across the valley in abundance.

In winter 2020/21, the National Trust planted a new woodland east of Blacksail YHA. Protected from grazing by a fence, the area is now home to thriving native trees and colourful wildflowers. Thanks to Pete, who carries out monthly fence checks, for sharing these wonderful photos and the view looking west from inside the enclosure.

The wildfire risk across Cumbria is currently very high. Please help us keep Ennerdale a special place to visit by not lighting fires, camping or using BBQ's. The ground and vegetation are so dry that any spark could cause serious damage to the valley's forests, habitats and wildlife.

>Please avoid naked flames, open fires or using barbecues in the countryside.
>Extinguish smoking materials properly,
>If you see a fire in the valley, report it immediately to Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service via 999.
>Early detection can prevent it from developing into a large wildfire incident. Know where you are – apps like What3Words can help with this.
>Please take care when parking vehicles to leave access roads, tracks and gates clear, and avoid parking on dry vegetation.

Walking across the areas felled on Cat Craggs in response to Phytophthora larch disease its heartening to see natural regeneration such as this birch and willow fighting for survival amongst grasses and rushes.

Deadwood is a really valuable habitat, these piece appears to have been bleached by the sun turning a lovely silvery grey colour.

Work to fell trees infected with phytophthora larch disease, along with spruce at Latterbarrow, is progressing well. Only around 7 hectares remain to be completed.
Throughout the operation, Forestry England has protected a number of heritage features across the site, with support from the Euroforest harvesting team and a consultant archaeologist.
Once the felling is complete, a phased approach will be taken to replant the area with native trees.
