A417 Missing Link – Key Milestone - from Monday 29 June 2026

We will be moving traffic to a temporary route on the A417 near Gloucester between the A46 Brockworth interchange and the former Cowley roundabout this summer - this includes permanently closing the existing A417 between Air Balloon and Ullenwood roundabout and the existing B4070.

The new section of the A436 and A417 will be open to traffic from 6am on Monday 29 June.

The road will look and feel different, with narrower lanes and a 40mph speed limit in place. The A417 will be reduced to one lane in both directions between A46 Brockworth Junction and Air Balloon roundabout. This is to allow us to work in new areas and complete the construction of the road.

Switching traffic onto this new section of road enables us to keep the road open for the traveling public, protect workers and minimise disruption.

This will be a significant change for road users. To help make things clearer, please visit our project webpage nationalhighways.co.uk/a417-missing-link, which includes diagrams and guidance on how to use the new road layout.

We're expecting this work to cause significant delays in the area and advise drivers to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra time.

The temporary route will be in place for at least five weeks and the date could be subject to change depending on weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Following the temporary traffic switch, we will be able to move traffic onto the new A417, which will become the permanent route. We will provide more detailed information closer to the time.

Throughout June, we will publish walking route diagrams and other materials to help you use the temporary route with confidence. We encourage you to share these with others who may find them useful.

A landscape-led highways scheme that will deliver a safe and resilient free-flowing road while conserving and enhancing the special character of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here is the latest information on the A417 missing link

New temporary route - summer 2026

This summer, we'll move traffic to a temporary route on the A417 between:

A46 Brockworth interchange
the former Cowley roundabout
This allows us to work in new areas and continue constructing the road.

We'll open the new section of the A436 and A417 to traffic from 6am Monday 29 June. We expect this temporary route to be in place for at least five weeks.

The road will look and feel different:

it will have narrower lanes and a 40mph speed limit
the A417 will be reduced to one lane in both directions between A46 Brockworth Junction and Air Balloon roundabout
We expect this work to cause significant delays in the area.

Please plan your journeys in advance and allow extra time.

If you use the A417 as part of a longer journey, consider alternative routes where possible - especially in peak times.

For more information on this scheme, visit our A417 Missing Link web page.
