🚔 North Cotswold Team 1 update 🚔

On Friday 29th May Officers were kept busy following reports of a suspected stolen moped that failed to stop for police.

Perhaps inspired by the Chipping Campden Olympics, the pair swapped two wheels for two feet and attempted to evade officers on foot in the area of Bourton on the Water. Following a coordinated response involving officers from Traffic, Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPT), Response Policing and the Special Constabulary, both males were located and arrested.

Both males were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, with one male further arrested for possession of an offensive weapon, both individuals have since been released on bail. 👮

In a separate incident during the same shift, officers stopped another male and seized a quantity of cannabis and this is being dealt with accordingly.

Having concluded one unofficial running event earlier in the evening, officers were pleased to attend the actual Chipping Campden Olympics and spent time with the community. Thank you to everyone who stopped to speak with us during the event 😃

This week, we’re once again taking part in Sceptre – an initiative which sees police forces across the country take intensified action to reduce the number of knives on our streets and educate people, in particular young people, about knife crime.

This Sceptre, officers and PCSOs will be carrying out additional patrols in targeted areas; carrying out knife sweeps in the search for hidden weapons; and taking our Neighbourhood and Community Engagement Vehicles out across the county from where they’ll provide advice and reassurance to members of the public about knife crime.

Our Youth Engagement Officers will also be delivering inputs on knife crime to both primary and secondary school pupils which will include highlighting the real life consequences that can come with carrying a knife.

Dedicated amnesty bins have been placed in police stations around the county for anyone who wants to dispose of a knife or bladed article.

To hand a knife or bladed article in, use a few sheets of newspaper or cardboard to wrap around it, ensuring that there is enough material to prevent it piercing through. It should also be sealed with sticky tape to stop the knife being easily removed or falling out of the wrapping.

You can find your local amnesty bin at the following station:

We're warning residents to be vigilant after a couple in the Cotswolds were targeted by a fraudster who claimed to be a police officer and tried to con them out of several hundred thousand pounds.

The couple, who are aged in their 50s and 60s, were called by a fraudster who claimed he was working for Hammersmith Police and had arrested a man who had the couple's bank cards in his possession.

On this occasion the victims did not transfer any money as they contacted police directly to check if the call was legitimate however officers believe other people in the county could now be targeted.

It followed a similar pattern to other fraud attempts around the UK, in which fraudsters claim to be police officers, and claim that either a person has been arrested for fraudulently using their bank cards or because fraudulent activity has been detected on their accounts.

Fraudsters will often ask the victim to hang up and dial 999 to confirm they are speaking to a legitimate police officer. However, this is part of the scam as the phone line is kept open and the victim ends up talking to another fraudster who is also involved in the con.

In this type of scam victims are asked to withdraw cash, which would then be collected by a fake police courier on the victim's doorstep, at another agreed location, or asked to send it to an address via post. Others are instructed to transfer funds into a fake police bank account.

Fraudsters are often manipulative and victims are often told to not tell their friends or family that they are "helping" with an investigation.

Officers are now urging people to warn their elderly or vulnerable relatives and friends about this type of fraud.

• If you believe you are being targeted by a scammer hang up the phone and use a different phone line to call Report Fraud or the police, as scammers have a way to stay on the line and will pretend to be the police when you call back
• If you don't have access to a different phone line, wait for a period of time, at least 10 minutes, and try calling a family member or friend first to make sure the scammer is no longer on the line.
• Neither police nor bank officials will ever ask you to withdraw money from your account, purchase anything or hand over your personal details or passwords
• Just because someone knows basic details about you like your name, address or date of birth, it doesn't mean they are genuine bank or police employees
• Always question suspicious phone calls and report them to Report Fraud or the police.

Fraud cases can be reported to Report Fraud online: https://www.reportfraud.police.uk/. Anyone who finds themselves in immediate danger should call 999.

Two suspected drink drivers were arrested last night in the district.

Just after 9pm PC Poole & PCSO Bulbul saw a black Ford Ranger bouncing off the kerbs as it was being driven through Moreton-in-Marsh. The officers stopped the car arrested the driver, a 51 year old man from Warwickshire. At our custody suite he was found to be over the drink limit. In the early hours of this morning he was charged and released on bail to appear at Cheltenham Magistrates court in June.

Shortly before 6am we were alerted to a crashed car near Andoversford. Response officers attended, found that a red Citroen had been driven into a tree but that the car was empty. The suspected driver was reported to have left the scene in another car. Officers located him at an address a few miles away and arrested him when he too provided a positive breath test. He was taken to hospital for a check up and then on to our custody suite. He remains with us for interview later today.
