More than 200 pubs have closed across the UK in the last six months.

In rural areas such as the South Cotswolds pubs are traditional community hubs- supporting local jobs, tourism, events and reducing loneliness.

Conservatives have been warning about Labour’s war on pubs and the significant strain they are facing, including:

📈Their 3.7% increase in Beer Duty
💷Job tax costing pubs £800 per worker in increased National Insurance
🏛️Business rates are up £5,700 on average per pub under Labour
⚡️Rising energy costs

The Conservative Party warned about the consequences of adding VAT to school fees and this week two major blows for Bridget Phillipson’s private schools VAT policy in one week:

📉 43,000+ pupils have left mainstream private schools since Labour imposed VAT on fees — a 7.6% drop, far higher than the decline across schools overall.

📚 The promised 6,500 extra teachers?

* Labour originally pledged 6,500 NEW teachers
* Then it became overall workforce growth
* Then only certain sectors counted
* Now official figures show 1,900 fewer full-time teachers than in 2024

💷 Every pupil leaving the independent sector costs the state around £8,400 per year to educate — meaning a larger-than-expected exodus undermines the policy’s own financial case.

🔄 Meanwhile, ministers appear to be quietly redefining the original pledge as the numbers fail to match expectations.

🤔 If the policy was supposed to raise money for education, why are pupil losses exceeding forecasts while teacher numbers are falling?

National Volunteers’ Week

Some of the biggest volunteer led events in the South Cotswolds range from
🏃 Woolsack Races in Tetbury
🎶 Phoenix Festival in Cirencester
🦆 Fairford Duck Race
🎭 Malmesbury Carnival
🎪 Kingswood Village Show
And 100s in between!!

There are so many of the events and initiatives that we enjoy across the South Cotswolds that rely on volunteers.

🤝There are countless ways to get involved in your local community, and when everyone does a little, it makes a huge difference.

🏡Volunteering is a rewarding way to meet new people, learn new skills and give something back to the community.

A big thank you to all those who volunteer their time to help make the South Cotswolds such a special place.

Not for the first time, Farage is wrong.

His language around this tragedy is totally irresponsible.

🚨 Labour is forcing huge housing numbers onto the Cotswolds — 18,650 new homes by 2043.

❌ In Moreton, the Lib Dem-run District Council failed to defend a local planning refusal when it mattered most.

If they won’t stand up for Moreton, will they stand up for our communities?
🏡 Areas of the South Cotswolds, including the Ampneys, the outskirts of Cirencester and land south of Tetbury, are at risk of overdevelopment if we don’t fight for planning led by local knowledge and local need.
🛣️ Growth must come with infrastructure.
📢 Local voices must be heard.

The South Cotswolds deserves better.

The Conservatives will always back local businesses. This means backing the people who get up early, take risks and roll up their sleeves to keep our towns, villages and high streets thriving. 🛍️☕🌾

Shadow Chancellor, Rt Hon. Sir Mel Stride MP has been standing up for businesses by campaigning against rising costs, supporting pubs and hospitality, and we will:

💰 Abolish business rates for 1000s of high street businesses including pubs and shops.

⚡️ Cut electricity bills for businesses with our Cheap Power Plan.

👮 Hire 10,000 extra police to crush crime on our high streets.

✂️ Cut red tape for businesses.

✉️ Defend key pillars of the community such as post offices, pubs and pharmacies.

Across the South Cotswolds we will continue championing the small businesses, family firms and rural employers that are the backbone of our local economy.

🎶 Shindig Festival- I requested a review of the license upon learning controversial punk act, Bob Vylan would be headlining.

💃 I absolutely support festivals and live music for all the benefits they bring to the local economy not to mention the enjoyment they bring to all who attend.

📅 I also initiated the review very soon after the headline act was announced at the beginning of March. Timetabling at Wiltshire Council is what has meant the hearing was only held today.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 The headline act of Bob Vylan called into question some of the objectives of the Licensing Act 2003, specifically the protection of children as this is advertised as a family friendly event.

🗣️ I am very much an advocate of free speech, I don’t think anyone should face criminal consequences for saying unpleasant things, but I don’t think local authorities should issue licenses to provide them a platform for such hateful comments.

🏛️It was in the public interest to review this license and the committee agreed as there were enough grounds to initiate the review. I have just come out of the license hearing and there will be no change to the license but the organisers have engaged and put in place some mitigation to prevent the act using the stage to communicate some of his more unpleasant rhetoric.

This is not about opposing festivals or live music- It’s about drawing a clear line against antisemitism and the climate of fear and intimidation that is normalising hatred of jews.

At a time when antisemitic abuse and violence against British Jews is rising across the UK, we cannot stay silent while performers accused of spreading antisemitic rhetoric are given a platform.

We stand with British Jews and are calling on Wiltshire Council to review Shindig Festival’s licence while Bob Vylan remains on the lineup.

If you believe antisemitism has no place in our communities or culture, support the review.
