Chorley Council

Chorley Council We are a district Council in Lancashire, serving the borough of Chorley. Our most recent developments include the £8.4 million, Strawberry Fields Digital Hub.

The state-of-the-art Business Centre for Digital & Creative businesses offers desk space facilities to all business sectors, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. We have recently made a raft of improvements to the famous Chorley market to ensure it continues to thrive in the modern-day town centre. These improvements have and continue to bring many exciting restaurants and retail

ers such as Marks and Spencer’s, Calico Lounge Café Bar and JD. We have just delivered a brand new ‘Carbon Neutral’ GP surgery, ‘Whittle GP’, which is a modern and high-quality health facility for Whittle-Le-Woods. We also see the importance in the fight against Climate Change and called a Climate Emergency in November 2019 and made the pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030 which we continue to work towards. As part of this, we have made the goal of planting 116k trees by 2025 – one for every resident and so far, over … have been planted. 🚧 Play area improvements – start dates confirmed

We recently shared that improvements would be taking place at two of our play areas in Chorley – and we’re pleased to now confirm the start dates 👇

🌳 Abbey Village
Improvements will bring accessible play equipment for all, with a focus on children aged 1 to 12 years. Work is due to begin from 20 July.

🌿 The Cherries, Euxton
This play area will also benefit from new accessible equipment, designed for children aged 1 to 6 years, with work starting from 3 August.
Both designs have been shaped by public consultation, helping ensure the spaces meet the needs of local families.

The works have been scheduled during this period to help minimise disruption, while also allowing for the safe delivery and installation of new equipment and materials. They are expected to take around four to six weeks to complete, and we appreciate your patience during this time.

Thank you to everyone who shared their ideas and helped influence these exciting developments 🙌

Have you spotted our newly named sweeper Shaun the Sweep? 👀🧹

He’s been out in Chorley doing what he does best! If you do see our superstar in action, don’t forget to share a snap with us! 📸

Shaun has already been hard at work in Astley Village, tackling w**d removal and widening pathways where growth had started to encroach. 🌿

These improvements are helping with accessibility and to enhance the overall look of the area. Even better, the team have received some great feedback and praise from residents who’ve noticed the difference! 👏

We said we’d be sharing more about what we’re doing in Chorley as part of National Licensing Week – and kicking things off with the day one theme of partnership working, here’s a look at what has taken place so far 👇

On Friday night (5 June), we launched Operation Abacus, working in partnership with Lancashire Police including support from Lancashire Constabulary Specials to help drive up taxi standards across the borough.

Our officers set up checkpoints and carried out inspections of licensed vehicles to make sure they were meeting our strict licensing conditions and being maintained to a high standard.

➡️ A total of 30 vehicles were inspected
➡️ Three vehicles were issued with defect notices for minor issues, such as lights not working – defect notices require the driver to fix faults and present the vehicle again for inspection.
➡️ No vehicles were found with faults serious enough to require immediate suspension

The vast majority of vehicles were found to be safe, suitable and compliant, helping to keep Chorley moving safely.

During the operation:
• One driver from another authority is being investigated after being suspected of being unlicensed and uninsured
• Another driver was found not to be in possession of his badge. He was ordered to return home, collect it and then return to us for inspection, which he did
• Police officers supporting the operation also dealt with separate incidents, including seizing a vehicle under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act for anti-social driving at one of our checkpoints and another was arrested on suspicion of drink driving

This work shows the importance of partnership working in keeping our communities safe and maintaining high standards across our licensed trade.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Chorley Councillor, Tommy Gray.

Tommy first served as a Councillor from 1999 to 2006, before returning in 2015 and continuing his service until May this year. During his time, he made a valued contribution across a number of areas, including Licensing, Planning and Scrutiny.

He also served as Mayor of Chorley from 2023 to 2024, representing the borough with pride and dedication.

Tommy will be remembered for his commitment to public service and the positive difference he made to the community.

A minute’s silence will be held at the next Council meeting as a mark of respect.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
