EMERGENCY VOLUNTARY LOGISTICS
Logistical support in adverse conditions. North West 4×4 Response is part of the national network, 4×4 Response UK, a voluntary organisation made up of 4×4 users looking to help make a difference. We provide support to the Emergency Services and their associated bodies, charities and other volunteer groups by providing trained personnel, vehicles and equipment in situ

ations of adverse weather or road conditions or logistical problems that neccesitate the use of four wheel drive vehicles. North West 4×4 Response covers several regions as follows: Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Cheshire. We are also available to any of the other national groups to assist when more vehicles are required in their own areas.

Volunteer focus… Responders.

I missed a dedicated Volunteers' Week post yesterday, we were kept quite busy at our Race For Life Events. So today I’m including all the Responders who volunteers for us.

They are the backbone of the Charity. The people behind all the work we do. They give up their own, personal vehicles, their spare time and their knowledge & expertise to all who need us. They provide transport to the NHS, Emergency & Essential Services when the weather hits, or terrain is unsuitable for stock vehicles, give up their evenings & weekends to help with event set up, operations and clean up, any instance where their experiences can be of value to others.

We like to be helpful and provide any service we possibly can to the public, and we’re all volunteers.

Good luck to all taking part in today’s Cancer Research UK Race for Life and Pretty Muddy at Preston’s Avenham & Miller Park.

Since this weekends events coincide with Volunteers' Week, a special thank you to our Responders, and all the Cancer Research UK marshals who are giving up their Saturday to support the life saving work cr_uk do.

Volunteer focus… Events Team.

The only time most of the public will see us is at public Events, from County Fairs & Shows, cycle & foot races to festivals, our Responders make themselves available to the Event Organisers for any task we can be helpful with, wether that be on site Traffic Management/Marshalling, personnel & equipment transport, assistance to on site Medical Teams, providing jump starts or being on standby to move to the carparks and start pushing & pulling stuck vehicles.

Events are also the best way for us to meet the public and fundraise. Events are organised by our Event Lead, another Committee position, arguably the one with the most paperwork! Being such a vast area as North West 4x4 Response, event days are usually managed by one of our experienced Volunteers, with purely PR & Fundraising days (where we aren’t expecting to work) being overseen by any of our different flavours of PR Dog.

Volunteer focus… Control Team.

Our dedicated Controllers are overseen by the Lead Controller, one of our Committee positions. They are the first port of call accepting call outs and jobs from our service users. Lead Controller is responsible for training his team in all aspects of our Despatch systems, all Responders in Radio etiquette and have extensive knowledge of which Volunteer has what equipment and availability to ensure the correct resources are deployed, the nearest appropriate person & vehicle for the task at hand. This is one of the few jobs within the Charity that can be done from home… in your slippers nursing a lovely cup of tea, while the rest of us are cold and wet!
When the winter weather hits (snow & ice) our Control Team will have a 24hour rota to make sure any inbound calls are answered and acted upon.
During large scale events or protracted major incidents they might be found inside the Emergency Operations Centre working along side 999 control staff providing professional liaison between our boots on the ground and the Emergency & Essential Service under JESIP principles.

Volunteer focus… Training Team.

Training Lead is one of our Committee positions, responsible for ensuring all Volunteers have the skills and knowledge they need before working under our name. The Lead will have several experienced Responders, or those with a particular set of skills, working under him to deliver various modules in our ongoing training matrix.
Initial training for new recruits consists of on & off road assessments and competency, followed up with certified First Aid & AED, Off Road, Winching and Water Safety when budgets allow. Some of our Training Team may be selected to attend Multi Agency Major Incident Command exercises, allowing them to act as Incident Commander on behalf of North West 4x4 Response, and pass their knowledge on to others within the group.

Volunteer focus… Trustees.

Our Trustees are the legal guardians of North West 4x4 Response, they have overall responsibility for any and all actions taken by the Charity. They create polices & procedures, and ensure they are followed by the Committee and, in turn, the populous. They are the named persons with the Charity Commission, it’s a lot of responsibility especially considering they are unpaid Volunteers!

This weekend we will be at the Outdoor Shows Ltd’s Astle Country Fair. We are primarily there Fundraising, however… the changeable weather means we may well be called in to help with on site Medical Teams for those affected by the heat, and the car parks if another thunderstorm hits.
