Memorial Safety Inspections – Important Information for Visitors
Chigwell Parish Council is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and dignified environment for everyone visiting Chigwell Cemetery.
As a public space, the Council has a legal duty of care to ensure that all memorials are stable and do not pose a risk to visitors, families, or staff.
Why are inspections taking place?
In accordance with health and safety legislation and national guidance, the Council is required to carry out regular Memorial Safety Inspections. These inspections are undertaken by trained and authorised cemetery staff.
What visitors may see
Over the coming days, we will be trialling a Memorial Safety Inspection Programme at Chigwell Cemetery. During this time, visitors may observe staff carefully examining memorials using a visual check and a gentle hand-pressure test. This is a nationally recognised and approved method for identifying memorials that may be unsafe.
If a memorial is found to be unsafe
Where a memorial presents an immediate risk, staff may take temporary action to make it safe. This may include:
• Installing discreet wooden supports
• Securing the memorial with safety strapping
• Placing a yellow warning marker on the memorial
These measures are precautionary, essential for public safety, and will not cause damage to the memorial.
What families and grave owners should do
• The Council will make every effort to contact the registered grave owner where necessary
• If you notice a warning marker or have any concerns, please contact us using the details below
We kindly ask that visitors do not remove or interfere with any temporary safety measures.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. These inspections are an essential part of our responsibility to ensure the safety of all cemetery users.
