IMPORTANT: Major Road Closures in Chichester
From Monday 15 June, urgent gas‑main replacement works will begin on Market Avenue and Basin Road. The project will run for 13 weeks and will involve road and lane closures, causing significant disruption.
Market Avenue, Chichester – 5 Weeks
Phase 1 – 15/06/26 for two weeks
• Lane Closure on Market Avenue
• Overnight Road Closure on the junction of South Street on to Market Avenue. The road will be closed from 8pm to 6am. Vehicle access northbound on to South Street will be maintained.
Phase 2 – Approx 29/06/26 for three weeks
Eastbound Closure Market Avenue – this will mean no vehicles can travel eastbound along Market Avenue, there will be a signed diversion route in place.
Basin Road, Chichester – 8 Weeks
Phase 3 – 13/07/26
Basin Road Closed from its junction with Canal Wharf to Railway Crossing
Phase 4
Lane Closures on Basin Road - as soon as phase three works are complete the road will be opened, Work will begin from Railway Crossing to junction Market Avenue under a lane closure on the one-way section of Basin Road.
What to expect:
• No vehicle access past closures (diversions in place)
• Access to properties/businesses maintained where safe
• Pedestrian access maintained
• Major impact on bus routes — please check operator updates
These works are essential due to ongoing gas leaks and the condition of the old main.
