Just after sunrise and before sunset the sun can shine directly into drivers’ eyes, leaving many motorists driving with a glare. This glare can make it much harder to see the road ahead and potential hazards creating an added risk to drivers. When sun glare is an issue slow down and use extra caution especially while driving through school zones.

Here are a few hints and tips to help reduce sun glare:-

* Invest in polarised sunglasses – they can help reduce glare.
* Use your sun visor – it can help to block out the sun.
* Leave more following room – when the sun is in your eyes it can be hard to see
what the car ahead is doing.
* Drive with your headlights on to increase your visibility to other drivers.
* Keep your windshield clean, inside and out.
* Check your windshield for pitting and cracks.
* Avoid storing papers or other items on the dashboard.

If the sun is still affecting your vision, avoid driving at these times.

Motorcyclists - wearing the appropriate gear when riding your bike is imperative.

🛵🏍️ The Right Gear Could Save Your Life 🏍️🛵

When you're heading out on your motorcycle, scooter, or moped, protective clothing isn't optional, it's your first line of defence.

Too often, riders choose lighter clothing for comfort, especially in warm weather or on short journeys. But if the unexpected happens, ordinary clothes offer little protection against impact and road abrasion.

Before every ride, make sure you're wearing:
✔️ An approved, correctly fitted helmet
✔️ A protective jacket and trousers
✔️ Motorcycle gloves
✔️ Sturdy, over-the-ankle footwear
✔️ High-visibility or reflective clothing where possible

The majority of journeys end safely, but crashes don't come with a warning. Whether you're travelling 2 miles or 200, wear the right gear every time you ride.

🥱 Sleep Deprivation and Fatigue

* The Risk: - Being awake for 17 hours or more degrades your driving skills as much as being over the drink-drive limit. With a number of the World Cup matches due to take place very late in the evening and in the early hours, sleep deprivation could be a very real concern.
* The Rule: - Avoid “microsleeps" whilst driving by planning your sleep schedule in advance or arrange alternative transport for the morning commute.
* The Penalties: - Causing a crash by falling asleep at the wheel is treated very seriously. In the UK, it typically results in a charge of dangerous driving or careless driving. Penalties include, unlimited fines, lengthy driving bans and up to 14 years in prison depending on the severity.

⚽⚽ FIFA World Cup 2026 – Road Safety Campaign! ⚽⚽

📱 Mobile Phone Distraction

• The Risk: - Glancing at a phone for just two seconds at 30 mph means driving blind for the length of a football pitch.
• The Rule: - It is strictly illegal to hold a phone whilst driving, even at traffic lights. Put your device in the glove box—out of sight, out of mind.
• The Penalties: - Using a handheld mobile phone while driving in the UK carries a standard penalty of 6 points on your driving licence and a fine of £200.

Don’t be tempted to use your mobile phone to check on the latest match scores whilst driving! If you really need to do this, pull over when safe to do so and switch your engine off first.
