Wingerworth & Rural SNT will be at Edinburgh Road Shops Wingerworth this afternoon, for our planned Street Meet event.

Join us from 4pm until 5pm, should you wish to discuss issues in Wingerworth, the Community Speedwatch Scheme or, we can chat about absolutely anything.

There will also be a chance to sign up to Derbyshire Alert, enabling you to have information from the police via email, direct to your inbox.

Due to issues yesterday around Deerpark Primary, Wingerworth & Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team will be monitoring parking around the school later today.

This is to coincide with events after normal school hours, between the hours of 5pm and 6.45pm.

Please be considerate if you are attending the school this evening and park safely, which includes not blocking drives or junctions.

Children and parents will be present so your cooperation would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Wingerworth,

Speeding remains a concern for many residents, and local volunteers play an important role in helping to address it.

Derbyshire Police’s Community Speed Watch scheme enables trained volunteers to work together to monitor speeds and encourage safer driving.

Wingerworth is looking to set up a new speed watch group in your area and are looking to attract volunteers. Can you help?

How does it work?

• Groups of trained volunteers conduct high visibility speed checks at approved locations
• Details of speeding vehicles are then forwarded to the CSW Team who verify the details and enter them onto a central database
• The registered owner is then sent an advisory/warning letter notifying them that they have been recorded speeding and that their details will be held pending any further incidents of them exceeding the speed limit

• This can include a personal visit by a Police Officer to deliver the letter dependent upon the circumstances.
Benefits

• Deters incidence of speeding at the location and immediate area at the time of sessions taking place
• Enables advisory/warning letters to be sent to those recorded as speeding
• Provides direct evidence of a speeding problem that can be utilised by police enforcement and other agencies
• Provides an opportunity for local communities to take a direct and positive stand against speeding
• Due to it being volunteer lead, the scheme provides the clearest sign that the community is no longer willing to tolerate speeding
• Directly contributes towards speeding becoming socially unacceptable

A big thank you to the Wingerworth residents who attended our Community Speedwatch meeting at Figaro on Friday.

We hope our input has given you the encouragement to continue the good work of the previous Speedwatch Group which was disbanded during Covid.

Your help and support will help to ensure that speeding within Wingerworth is monitored, and reported to us.

Speeding… it’s a hot topic that regularly comes up in our SNT Facebook comments section or Community Voice surveys.

You might believe a little bit of speeding is okay and shouldn’t be targeted by the police, or you might think that it is the most serious of crimes... but what’s the truth?

Speeding might be an issue that you don’t consider serious, however it is one of the fatal four. The fatal four are the four offences which contribute to serious collisions. The other fatal four offences are drink or drug driving, using a mobile device whilst driving or not wearing a seat belt.

The fact is, speeding does kill. In 2024, 1602 people died on UK roads because drivers were travelling above the speed limit. All of those people have family, friends and loved ones left behind due to drivers choosing to go above the limit.

Our volunteers who run Community Speed Watch Groups give up their time because they care about their communities and want to help protect residents in their area.

Derbyshire communities shouldn’t have their lives put at risk due to speeding motorists. Many of these volunteers have jobs and busy lives outside of their volunteering but feel passionate about keeping local families safe.

In addition, speeding is constantly an issue that communities in Derbyshire highlight as being a significant problem and one they wish to see action taken. That’s why our groups target those areas which have been reported by the community as high-risk roads.

Policing isn’t just about tickets, it’s also about education and community involvement, and these speed sites encompass the two.

Our officers will step in and ticket drivers, when necessary, but we want more than that. We want to really educate drivers on why speeding does matter, and why it is something we’ll continue to target to keep Derbyshire safe.

The following crime prevention advice is being circulated as our nights get darker earlier and the fear of crime can increase.

Here are a few things you can do to feel safer:

• Leave a light on in more than one room, such as the lounge and bedroom. Remember to choose low-energy lamps.
• Use a timer switch to operate the lights as it starts to get dark.
• Change the times that the lights come on to create the illusion that someone is moving around inside the home.
• Consider the use of ‘smart’ technology to have different lights coming on in your house at different times.
• Make sure your front door is well lit and fully visible from the street. Also think about security lighting at the rear and side of your property.
• Keep shrubbery and hedges at the front pruned to below 1 metre to remove cover for a burglar to work unseen and allow visibility by neighbours.
• Consider having a good quality CCTV system installed.
• Keep your curtains closed at night - if you are away, ask a neighbour to close them for you.
• Check existing lighting is in good working order and replace any faulty equipment.
• Remember to check batteries in torches and smoke alarms.
• Lock all windows and doors even when you are at home.
• Put the alarm on even when you go out and at night
• Don’t leave valuables items or car keys on view near your front door.

Good evening

Just a couple of issues regarding parking around our local schools, in particular Hunloke Primary in Wingerworth.

If your excuse is to say ‘’i am waiting to pick my child up’’, opposite double white lines, then this is unacceptable.

Also parking too close to a junction at any time is dangerous, and a hazard to pedestrians and other road users.

Lets remember that keeping our children safe outside our schools, is everyones priority and responsibility.

🚨 Hate Crime Awareness Week 11th – 18th October🚨

This week focuses on raising awareness of hate crime and highlighting the important of creating safer, more inclusive communities across Derbyshire.

A hate crime is defined as 'Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a person's race or perceived race; religion or perceived religion; sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation; disability or perceived disability and any crime motivated by hostility or prejudice against a person who is transgender or perceived to be transgender.'

Hate Crime can have a significant impact on individuals, families and communities. Everyone has the right to feel safe, respected and free from discrimination and hostility.

Officers across Eckington and Killamarsh will be carrying out a range of community activities highlighting hate crime.
