We are writing to update you regarding ongoing concerns about the condition of the back lanes serving Poplar Street, Pine Street, Victor Street and Albert Street in Chester-le-Street.
PCSOs & Neighbourhood Wardens have received several reports relating to the illegal disposal of waste, dog fouling and littering within these back lanes. Unfortunately, the accumulation of waste has not only affected the appearance of the area but has also attracted anti-social behaviour and raised concerns regarding public health and community safety.
In response to these concerns, PCSO Adrian Richards BEM coordinated a multi-agency day of action involving Neighbourhood Wardens, local volunteers and Durham County Council's Clean and Green Team. During this operation, inspections were carried out and significant quantities of waste, litter and animal faeces were removed from the affected areas.
We are pleased to report that the back lanes have now been thoroughly cleared, greatly improving the environment for residents. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this successful clean-up effort and those residents who continue to take pride in keeping the area clean and welcoming.
However, during the inspections, several properties were identified where waste was being allowed to accumulate. These cases are now being investigated and will be subject to appropriate enforcement action where necessary.
Residents are reminded that household waste must be disposed of correctly and should not be left or dumped in back lanes. The Council will investigate any future incidents of fly tipping, littering or waste offences, and enforcement action may be taken where evidence is available. This evidence may include physical evidence found within the waste, officer observations, CCTV footage, or witness statements provided by members of the public.
We are committed to working with residents to maintain a clean, safe and pleasant environment for everyone. By working together and taking responsibility for waste disposal, we can help ensure that the recent improvements are maintained for the benefit of the whole community.
