🎵 A summer of music, sunshine and community spirit

What a summer it has been for music on the riverside!

Bands on the Bandstand 2026 brought three months of free live music to Chepstow’s Riverside Bandstand, with a fantastic mix of rock, folk, punk, swing, jazz, blues, choirs and brass bands on Sunday afternoons.

With glorious summer weather on their side, audiences gathered with picnics and chairs, danced on the grass and enjoyed afternoons of live music with family and friends.

Jon from Don’t Tell Johnny, pictured here performing in June, said: “A fantastic summer meant Bands on the Bandstand was well attended every Sunday. I’d like to congratulate Chepstow Town Council and Caron Baker for putting on a fun, vibrant and varied programme over the summer to keep everyone entertained and supporting live music and musicians!”

He added, “It was great to see so many groups enjoying picnics and using it as an opportunity to meet up with family and friends and have a great, chilled afternoon in the sun. Long may it continue. The format is great and seems to be going from strength to strength each year!"

The events were supported by Keep Chepstow Tidy, with volunteers attending many of the gigs and carrying out litter picks afterwards. Steve, from the group, told us: “It was great as we got to see the bands before having a tidy up afterwards and people were pretty good at taking their rubbish home and using the recycling bins. My highlights? Favourite band: Don’t Tell Johnny. Most interesting litter: a gold ring!”

A huge thank you to all the performers, volunteers and everyone who came along to enjoy another brilliant summer of music and community in Chepstow. 💚

🌺 Celebrating 70 years of service to the Royal British Legion

A very special honour was presented this week to John Duke, recognising an incredible 70 years of dedication to the Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal. Royal British Legion National Chair, Lydia Atkins, presented the 70 years Gold Award and Badge to John at a celebration held on Tuesday night (pictured).

John’s involvement began in 1955, when he was just 14 years old and started collecting for the Poppy Appeal. Seven decades later, his commitment to remembrance and to supporting the local community remains as strong as ever.

Over the years, John has served several times as Chepstow Branch Treasurer and Poppy Appeal organiser, travelling across the local area to deliver collection tins, support schools and local organisations, organise wreaths and help with collections. And even after passing on the role of Poppy Appeal organiser, John continued to share his knowledge and experience with those taking it forward.

Mike Claridge, Chairman of Chepstow RBL, described John's remarkable contribution as “the epitome of what a great volunteer looks like", saying "his dedication, experience and generosity earned him the admiration and respect of everyone who has worked with him."

To give 70 years of voluntary service is an extraordinary achievement, and this well-deserved recognition is a wonderful way to celebrate everything John has given to the Royal British Legion and the people of our local community.

Congratulations, John, and thank you for seven decades of service and remembrance. 🌺
