Six amazing young people from St. Paul’s and the Moors have completed an ASDAN course, building confidence and skills in communication, trust, and respect.

They also led inspiring social action projects on online safety, women’s safety, and health and wellbeing.

They received their certificates from The Mayor of Cheltenham, a proud moment for them and their families👏

‘I was delighted to open the new Emmaus shop here in the vibrant Bath Road shopping area, it’s a fabulous location and bizarrely replaces the former Nat West Bank where I used to work many years ago. Emmaus is a fabulous local charity providing accommodation for the homeless, offering them employment opportunities and of course collecting, renovating and selling fabulous second hand goods from vintage clothing to jewellery, electrical appliances to furniture. I wish them every success.’

A big thank you to the Springbank Community Group for inviting me to their rather damp Fun Day. Despite the weather everyone had a smile on their face. Thank you to organiser Faith for showing me around, pictured here with two of the amazing Food Pantry volunteers and thank you to all those organisations which took part including the Girl Guides who do such a fabulous job but are looking for more volunteers. Visit girlguiding.org.uk to volunteer or to join.

Despite the variable weather of late I have enjoyed a busy month going to events across our town and welcoming visitors to the Mayor’s Parlour.

I was delighted to welcome Alfie Lightstone and his family to the Parlour for afternoon tea. Alfie, pictured third from the left, who is a student at Pittville School, won the Gloucestershire Young Volunteer of the Year award and we all enjoyed a lovely afternoon chatting about Cheltenham, the Robins, the climate emergency and eating meat amongst other things, well done Alfie, a thoroughly deserved award.

Despite the weather everyone had a fun time at the Youth Activity Summer Scheme run by the Brizen Trust. There were plenty of indoor games to play and food to eat and it was clear to me that everyone was having a really great time. Special mention goes to my new Deputy Mayor, Leonardo, although the Mayoral Chain did suit him well, and all those volunteers who work so hard to put on this scheme during the school summer holidays including Councillors Tony Oliver and Iain Dobie and former Councillor Anne Regan all pictured here along with our MP Max Wilkinson.

The Mayoress and I enjoyed a fabulous visit to the magnificent Highnam Court and gardens for the Kings Coronation Medal Parade. These annual awards are presented by the Gloucestershire Army Cadet Force to celebrate the work and service of Cadet Force adult volunteers in Gloucestershire some of whom have been volunteers for more than 30 years. They have certainly earned their medals, their recognition and our thanks.

The Army Cadet Force has two locations in Cheltenham, at Arle Road and Charlton Kings, membership is free and they offer a fabulous range of experiences and skill sets as well as the opportunity of making new friends. There are over 39,000 cadets in the UK aged between 12 and 18. For more information call 01242 700063 or email [email protected]

I enjoyed a lovely visit to the Bangladeshi Community Centre where I was able to meet, address and thank this wonderful local community who contribute so much to our town. They also welcome Muslims from other countries including a number of recently settled refugees. I explained how much they are valued and how much the diversity of our town has been enriched by the presence of different faiths and cultures. They made me feel really welcome.

Lovely to meet a party of students from Japan here for a couple of weeks to study our language and culture. Our international visitors are an important part of our town’s economy and vibrancy and I am sure many will return in years to come perhaps with their own families. Thank you to Inlingua language school for inviting me to present the students with their certificates.
