The free NHS flu vaccine is available for children aged 2 and over. Most children have the flu vaccine as a quick nasal spray, that means no needles and it only takes a few seconds.

This year, the free NHS flu vaccine is offered to:

- children aged 2 or 3 on 31 August 2026
- children aged 4 who have not started school
- school-aged children from Reception to Year 11
- children aged 6 months to 17 years with certain long-term health conditions.

A new PET-CT centre at Southend Hospital is helping cancer patients across Essex get faster scans in a more comfortable environment.

The purpose-built facility features the latest scanning technology, larger waiting areas and six dedicated rooms where patients can relax before their scan.

The new scanner is expected to increase capacity by more than 20%, helping reduce waits for essential diagnostic imaging.

👋 Meet Stephen, a First Contact Physiotherapist working in a Southend GP practice.

Stephen assesses and treats patients with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions — from back and neck pain to joint injuries and arthritis. By seeing patients directly, he helps them access the right support quicker.

💉 Flu isn't just a risk for older people.

Did you know that last winter, only 38% of people under 65 with long-term health conditions in Essex had their flu vaccination?

If you have diabetes, heart disease, significant asthma or a weakened immune system, flu could leave you seriously ill – even if you're young.

Dr Matthew Sweeting, Executive Medical Director at NHS Essex, is urging everyone who is eligible to get protected this winter.

Would your son tell you if he suddenly had severe pain in a testicle?

Testicular torsion is a medical emergency that most commonly affects boys and young men aged 10 to 18.

It happens when a testicle twists and cuts off its blood supply. Without urgent treatment, permanent damage can happen within hours.

In Essex, more than one boy or young man loses a testicle every month because they do not reach hospital quickly enough.

If your son develops sudden, severe testicular pain:

➡️ Take it seriously
➡️ Go straight to A&E
➡️ Do not wait to see if the pain improves
➡️ Call 999 if you cannot get to hospital quickly

Embarrassment can delay young people asking for help, so having the conversation now could make a real difference.
