What objects tell Chelmsford’s story today?

Spark! and the Museum of Chelmsford want to hear what objects tell your story of life in Chelmsford now, to help shape the museum's future collection.

Elora, of SPARK!, shares:

"I love buses, I love having the privilege to live in a country with public transport at a relatively low cost. I love that I can bus to anywhere and everywhere."

Have you seen the items we have on display all year round to celebrate Pride month? 🌈

These items were given to us after featuring in our 2023 exhibition Behind the Rainbow and can be found in the 20th Century gallery. We have these on continuous display to recognise and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community as part of Chelmsford’s story 💖

If you’re feeling inspired to get involved, Essex Pride is happening this Saturday 20 June - perfect timing to join in the celebrations!

Be real. Be proud. Be you!

Seek out the unknown with Chris Stone! 🔭

Chris Stone set out on a mission to explore Europe’s hidden deserts and find out more about these vast, sandy and little-known landscapes that feel a world away from their surroundings. On these adventures he discovered that these deserts are not only vital habitats for rare wildlife but also hidden gems which give us an insight into human history as never seen before.

In this visually striking talk, Chris Stone reveals why these overlooked places matter, how they are under threat and why they deserve protection. He offers a fresh and thought-provoking perspective of Europe’s natural environment and challenges common perceptions about these extraordinary landscapes which are much closer than you think.

Join Chris Stone on Saturday 27 June at 11am to discover what has been slipping through the sand all these years: https://www.museumofchelmsford.co.uk/events/heathlands-and-badlands-the-deserts-of-europe-are-closer-than-you-think/

Here at Museum of Chelmsford, we proudly display Marconi’s H1200 high-frequency radio transmitter used by the Ministry of Defence in the 1960s. These units were designed and engineered in Chelmsford, giving our city the title of ‘Home of Radio’.

The buttons and switches on these units look complicated but it was the first system designed for a single engineer to manage the precise tuning needed for broadcasting.

Swipe to see the different types of controls and wires on the panels including Power & Safety interlocks, Valve Monitors, Tuning and Frequency, Overload and Trip resets and so much more!
