The Great Lines Park ~ Chatham. Kent. "Temair" ~ A Sacred Space ~ The Great Lines are open to the public 24/7, admission is free and afford some splendid views over Chatham and the Medway Estuary.

Archaeological excavations were conducted in the 18th Century and an Anglo-Saxon Burial Complex was discovered. The original meaning of the Irish name "Temair" is obscure ~ It has been explained as meaning a 'height with a view', a 'Sacred Space', or 'The Gates to the Otherworld'.

he Second World War Extension Wall is taken from Chapter 44 of the Book of Ecclesiasticus, and reads,

"All These Were Honoured In Their Generations And Were The Glory Of Their Times"

The extension was unveiled by The Duke of Edinburgh on 15th October 1952. Originally called 'The Great Lines of Defence' this area of land separates Chatham and Gillingham and has been owned by the Ministry of Defence for centuries. The Great Lines are open to the public 24/7, admission is free and afford some splendid views over Chatham and the Medway Estuary, as well as a highly recommended fireworks display for Guy Fawkes' night ~ (admission is free - Please check the local papers for the exact date of the display)
