There’s less than two weeks left to stop bike parking charges in Hammersmith & Fulham.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council is consulting on whether to start charging motorcycles to park. Right now bikes park free across almost all of the borough, including solo motorcycle bays, and nothing's decided yet. Council documents suggest they're open to keeping solo bays free, but that only happens if riders make the case now.

The ask is simple: no charges for motorcycles across the borough, and if charges land elsewhere, solo bike bays stay free and any charge reflects the tiny space a bike actually takes up next to a car.

You don't need to live in H&F to respond. If you commute, work, shop, visit family or just ride through the borough, the council wants to hear from you, including how a charge might push you towards a car instead.

Save London Motorcycling has been pushing this one. MAG backs it: free bike parking is one of the incentives to ride instead of drive.

Consultation closes 5pm, Friday 18 September. Have your say before then.

About this consultation The council is considering introducing parking charges for motorcycles for the first time. We want to understand resident and non-resident views on motorcycle parking in their area — including from those who ride motorcycles and those who do not.

The Met Police scrapped BikeSafe training for London riders. ACBT London didn't wait for someone else to fix it.

Ride Safe London brings back the spirit of BikeSafe by employing two of the six original Metropolitan Police BikeSafe officers. These experienced, police-trained motorcyclists observe participants and provide constructive feedback and advice, just as they did under the original scheme.

Met Police BikeSafe training has ended in London. Ride Safe London by ACBT fills the gap with expert, police-trained observed rides.

The Department for Transport says it has “limited evidence” for bringing motorcycles into a new emissions law. We asked for that evidence under freedom of information law and found out what “limited” really meant.

Press release: DfT confirms it has no evidence to justify bringing motorcycles into a new emissions law.

MAG submitted a request under the Environmental Information Regulations asking the Department for Transport what evidence supports its proposal to bring motorcycles under Regulation 61A — a new criminal offence, fines from £1,000 to unlimited. The DfT's written response? It holds no analysis, no comparison data, and no assessment of the impact on riders or the trade.

Colin Brown, MAG's Director of Campaigns and Political Engagement, put it bluntly: "That is not evidence, it's a shrug. Riders deserve better than being brought into a new criminal offence on a shrug."

DfT's new ZEV Mandate consultation is 93 pages long. It sets rules for cars and vans out to 2035. It doesn't mention motorcycles once.

Back in 2022, a separate consultation proposed ending sales of new petrol motorcycles and mopeds — 2030 for machines up to 125cc, 2035 for the rest. It closed four years ago. Riders have heard nothing since; a written answer to Parliament in November 2023 said a response was coming “in due course.”

MAG has written to the Department for Transport demanding it finally answer that 2022 consultation and confirm, in writing, that motorcycles are exempt from this policy and any fixed phase-out date. We're asking every rider to do the same.
