Cornus kousa is looking absolutely delightful with its inflorescences just now.

The white petal like structures are actually modified leaves, with the small flowers in the centre.

There are a few located around the garden, the one pictured is at the front of the rock garden in all its splendour.

🌿 Dead Wood, Living Wildlife 🪵🐞🐦

As part of the ongoing landscape restoration work at Threave Nature Reserve, we’re creating and retaining a variety of dead wood habitats across the site, including standing dead wood, log piles and brash piles.

While dead wood may appear lifeless, it plays a vital role in supporting biodiversity. These habitats provide food, shelter and breeding sites for countless insects, fungi and other invertebrates, which in turn support birds, mammals and other wildlife.

Standing dead trees can offer valuable nesting and roosting opportunities for birds and bats, while log and brash piles create safe refuges for insects, amphibians and small mammals. By incorporating dead wood habitats within hedgerows and wildlife corridors, we are strengthening habitat connectivity across the reserve, helping species move through the landscape more easily.

These natural features are an important part of creating a healthier, more resilient ecosystem and demonstrate how habitat restoration can benefit wildlife at every level. 🍄🍄‍🟫🐛🐞🦟🪲🐜🕷️🪶🪺🦔

The summer bedding is planted.

After a few weeks of debating when we would plant the bedding, it finally got planted yesterday with a big team of staff, trainees and volunteers.

The plants arrive as plugs, and get potted in a few hours, by a big group and then left to grow on in the back up glasshouse being watered and fed to keep them healthy.

This years plants include:
Matthiola (stocks) ‘Hot Cakes Mix’
Ageratum ‘Aloha Blue’
Bacopa ‘Megacopa Blue’
Bidens ‘Sixbi Sun’
Nemesia ‘Lady Rose’
Osteospermum ‘Akila Hawaii Sunset’
Lantana ‘Shamrock Peach’
Canna Tropicanna Gold ‘Mactro’

Over the next few weeks they will bulk up and fill the spaces and should look lovely.

Meet the mini-beasts 😃- first in our series, pollinators! 🪰 When we think of pollinators we picture bees and butterflies, but there are a myraid of other important insect pollinators, from beetles to hoverflies.

Threave Nature Reserve volunteer Brian Jones has captured some in these stunning photographs, part of his documentation of invertebrates across the Threave Landscape Restoration Project. Hoverflies like this buttercup blacklet (cheilosia albitarsis) and chequered hoverfly (melanostoma scalare) are harmless bee imitators, the very short-lived St. Marks fly (bibio marci), a vital pollinator in early spring, and dance flies like the empis tessellata and dark-kneed dance fly (empis opaca).

Pollinating an estimated £690 million of crops in the UK every year, we literally would not survive long without them - wild pollinators are also a vital part of the food chain, sustaining the birds and mammals we love. Over 97% of wildflower-rich grassland has been lost here since the end of the first world war, leading to a serious decline, and an urgent need to protect and restore healthy diverse grassland as well as woodland and wetland ecosystems.
