Castle Donington Community Hub

Castle Donington Community Hub Castle Donington Parish Council purchased the Tudor Hotel in Nov. 2016. The building opened in Sept. 2018. Ultimately there were two options:

1.

It is home to the Parish Council, the Volunteer Centre, the Community Library, the Police Beat Team, plus Hub Cafe and function rooms. The Background

Since the 2008 financial market collapse, Central Government funding to County and District Councils has been consistently reduced year on year. To balance their decreasing budgets, Leicester County Council and North West Leicestershire District Cou

ncil have been obliged to make cuts leading to services delivered to our community suffering. These cuts also affect voluntary organisations and charities, which rely on grants from local government to operate. Three years ago Castle Donington Parish Council debated the impact of these cuts on this community. Endure the cuts and watch important services decline, or

2. Where necessary and possible, take control of those services for the benefit of the community

Option 2 was chosen and in order to fund some of these services the local precept element of Council Tax was increased in 2014 by around £35/year (70p/week) for a band D property. This allowed the Parish Council to help fund organisations such as The Volunteer Centre and The Community Library plus take over some of the services no longer supported by the County Council. A further £5/year increase in 2015 to take on urban grass cutting, means Castle Donington stands as a beacon against most areas of ‘overgrown’ Leicestershire. For 20 years through Village Appraisal, Parish Plan and on line research it has been clear that this community has desired a “Hub” of important local services. With the current financial pressures continuing, the Parish Council has been trying to purchase a relatively central building to enable organisations that support our community to work together sharing resources and thereby reducing overall running costs. This year the opportunity arose to purchase the Tudor Hotel on Bondgate; a very large building with an equally large car park relatively close to the centre of the village. This was considered a once in a generation opportunity to create this “Hub” and the unanimous decision was taken by the Parish Council to pursue the purchase. This was completed on 15th November 2016. The Future

Discussions are now underway to provide a facility that will be used by the community organisations as well as provide a higher profile site to the monthly Farmers’ Market. It is expected that the building will be ready for occupation around June 2017. Alongside this there is an ambitious project to have local transport linking all areas of the village to the Bus Station, Borough Street and the Hub. We shared some exciting news yesterday — we’re delighted to announce that we’ve officially bought The Rainbow Room! 🌈

Many of you will remember it as our original base, and since Julie and Alex took it on, they’ve transformed it beautifully, including the addition of a lovely new outdoor space.

Julie and Alex have decided to focus their time on The Olive Branch Toy Shop and enjoy a slower pace of life, which is very well deserved! We would like to thank them for everything they’ve done for the building and the community.

As The Rainbow Room is home to so many valued community groups, and with Castle Donington Community Hub often fully booked, we knew it was important to secure the space for the hundreds of local residents who use it every week.

We’ve already spoken with the groups who regularly hire the space to reassure them that everything will continue as normal, and it’s been wonderful meeting so many familiar faces over the past few days.

Here is a photo from the moment we received the keys yesterday, and we’re pleased to say we’re now open for new bookings! ✨

We have some exciting news! We have bought The Rainbow Room!

It was once our base, but after it was sold to Julie and Alex its had some beautiful work done to it, and the addition of a new outside space!

Julie and Alex have decided to focus their attention on The Olive Branch Toy Shop and to take a slower pace of life - and rightly so!

As the building is home to many important community groups, and because we often have to turn away bookings at Castle Donington Community Hub as it is so busy, we have decided to take back the building and keep a secure base for the hundreds of residents who use it weekly.

We have spoken to those who currently hire the room regularly, and ensured that their space is safe. It was lovely to meet many of them this week!

Here was the moment we recieved the keys earlier today- and we are now open for new bookings!

Bosworth Park has a brand new path!

Following some section 106 funding, we have been working hard to revamp some of our playgrounds!

Improvements at the Spital, Glover and Gasny parks are complete, and at Grange Drive we are currently adding an accessible roundabout, new climbing frame and trim trail. Next, we will move onto Stone Hill (there will be a new path there too)
