Royal Air Force Brize Norton has formally welcomed Group Captain Stu Patton as the new Commander Air Wing at RAF Brize Norton, marking the transition of leadership for the Royal Air Force's Air Mobility Force, succeeding Group Captain Andy McIntyre, who has served in the role since 2024.

RAF Brize Norton has delivered summer holiday activities for children and young people, demonstrating the Station's commitment to supporting Service families and recognising the vital role they play in operational success.

Made possible through the dedication of Station volunteers, People & Families Support staff and generous funding from the RAF Benevolent Fund, the programme enabled children and young people to develop new skills, build confidence, form friendships and create lasting memories throughout the summer holidays.

Station Commander Group Captain Kate said:

"Our families are fundamental to all we do. By investing in opportunities for children and young people, we are not only creating memorable experiences and strengthening our community but also enabling our personnel to focus on delivering operational outputs. The support of the RAF Benevolent Fund has made a real difference to both our families and the Station.”

Remembering five airmen who lost their lives near Black Bourton.

This week marks the 82nd anniversary of the loss of Royal Air Force Albemarle V1782, which crashed near the Oxfordshire village of Black Bourton on 27 August 1944, killing all five members of its crew.

The Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle, operated by No. 297 Squadron from RAF Brize Norton, was returning to base following an operational mission when tragedy struck. During the attempted landing, the aircraft overshot the runway and crashed in a field at Mill Farm, near Black Bourton. The aircraft was destroyed and all five airmen on board were killed.

Chief Technician Robert James Thatcher.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Chief Technician Robert James Thatcher ‘Thatch’, who sadly passed away on 12 August 2026, following a short battle with cancer.

Rob served the Royal Air Force with distinction for 24 years, dedicating his career to supporting air operations and mentoring those around him. His service included seven years with XV(Reserve) Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth, six years with the Red Arrows, and eight years as a Ground Engineer with No. LXX Squadron (Atlas (A400M)). Throughout his career, he earned the respect of colleagues across the RAF for his professionalism, expertise, and unwavering commitment to duty.

RAF Brize Norton airfield - Speed and efficiency at work!

With responsibility for the Royal Air Force Brize Norton runway formally handed over to the project delivery team in late July, work has progressed rapidly in the last three weeks across the Airfield.

The speed and efficiency at which work has been undertaken has been incredibly impressive to watch, with around 500 personnel and a myriad of different pieces of machinery working in tandem under the relentless August sunshine.

As of 16th August some 80% of the 3-Kilometre-long runway has had its ‘plane out’ completed with various other enabling works having taken place. The work up to this point has also seen some 42,250 meters cubed of material ‘broken out’, with much of it to be repurposed into the relaying of the runway in the coming weeks. For context the volume of material dug out so far would fill 16 Olympic Swimming Pools!

The project is being meticulously planned and scheduled with close liaison between Air Infra, The Defence Infrastructure Organisation, the delivery teams, and RAF Brize Norton. We’re sure you’ll agree the imagery makes for a very different perspective of the airfield!
