RAF Medical Reserves 4626 Squadron

RAF Medical Reserves 4626 Squadron 4626 Squadron recruit Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, EMT, ECA and HCA working in acute settings We are currently based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

Formed in 1983, 4626 Squadron is the only aeromedical evacuation squadron unit in the RAF Reserves. We work closely with the regular RAF to help to evacuate injured military personnel from operational theatres during conflicts. We also support the RAF in peacetime air evacuations of military and entitled civilian personnel from many locations around the world. We have been closely involved in a wi

de range of operations, from the first Gulf War to the current deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Squadron is made up of ground-handling flights (involved in ground-based patient care) and aeromedical flights (qualified to fly with patients). The roles we offer are mainly for medical professionals seeking a new and different challenge. In all of them, you will use and add to your existing medical skills. You will be trained to care for sick or injured military (or entitled civilian) personnel in conflict areas. You will assist, either on the ground or in the air, in providing medical care to stabilised patients, making sure that they are safely moved to a hospital or military establishment (usually within the UK). There are ongoing opportunities for further specialist training, as well as combat fitness training. Our Reservists have been deployed during times of crisis and conflict – for example, during the Gulf conflicts in 1990–91 and 2003, as well as to Afghanistan in 2006. We are heavily involved in current operations and continue to provide medical support at a moment’s notice.

From the 9th to the 11th of August, members of 4626 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron came together and travelled to North Wales to participate in Force Development activities which involved lowland hiking and an indoor climbing session. The group consisted of personnel who normally work in the NHS as nurses, physios and paramedics. A collection of hiking routes around Ogwen Valley was created in order to enhance participants’ resilience through accurate route planning in wet and windy conditions. The group also learned from each other about how to effectively pack kit and protect it from the weather and also reduce risks of hot and cold injuries by using a clothing layering system that allowed for adaptation to the rapidly changing weather.

On the day after the hike that covered 18 kilometres and gradients of varying degrees of severity the group enjoyed a few hours of indoor climbing at the Indy Climbing Centre. Experience levels of climbing varied with some group members being professional instructors and others looking forward to their first time on a wall. Everyone took the opportunity to make the most of the facilities with some developing their bouldering skills, others learning the basics of rope safety and climbing teamwork and others overcoming fears associated with heights.
