Standing up for my Trade Union Brothers and Sisters backing a Good Jobs Bill for NI

The FLAME Gasworks Museum is a genuinely unique attraction. Carrickfergus Gasworks is Ireland's only surviving coal gasworks and one of only three remaining in the whole of Great Britain and Ireland. It opened in 1855, supplied the town with gas for over 100 years, and is home to one of Europe's largest surviving sets of horizontal retorts. This is an irreplaceable part of our industrial heritage and it deserves far better than to be left sitting closed.

I asked the Minister for Communities what his Department is doing to protect the building, its equipment and artefacts, and what plans exist to get it back open to the public. His answer was nothing short of inadequate. He said his Department maintains the monument. The Council looks after the appliances and artefacts. And there are no plans to reopen. That is not an answer, that is a hand-washing exercise.

The Carrickfergus Gasworks Preservation Society has put enormous work into restoring this site. Visitors can see one of Europe's largest surviving sets of horizontal retorts, go up the gasholder for panoramic views across the town, and explore an extensive collection of gas appliances and a library on the gas industry. There is real potential here as a visitor and educational attraction, and right now it is sitting locked up.

The Minister needs to stop pointing fingers between his Department and the Council and start working with everyone involved to get the museum back open. The people of Carrickfergus and beyond deserve nothing less, and if he cannot commit to that, then at the very least I would ask him to consider whether the collection should be relocated to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum where it can be properly cared for and enjoyed by the public. These artefacts are too important to sit gathering dust indefinitely.

If there’s one thing DUP & SF agree on, it's maintaining division.
The cost of doing so in health, education, and community services could run into the £100s of millions.
Last week, they teamed up to block looking into how much we’d save from creating a more integrated society. Check out how they voted in East Antrim.

I welcome the re-advertisement of a public consultation on traffic control measures at the Glenville Road/Shore Road junction in Whiteabbey.

I have been raising the dangerous condition of this junction for years, and I am glad that pressure from myself and residents has now resulted in DfI re-advertising this consultation. This junction has seen too many accidents over the years, including at times multiple in a single week.

The consultation can be accessed at www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk/consultations/re-advertisement-prohibition-right-hand-turn-newtownabbey-order-northern-ireland-2026. It closes at 5.00pm on 22 May 2026.
