Dryslwyn Community Shop

Dryslwyn Community Shop An introduction to our community shop, including details of all our offers, events and activities. Me So here we are today, a thriving and successful enterprise.

In 2008 Post Office Ltd closed 2500 post offices, and Dryslwyn was scheduled to be one of them. Removal of the postmaster's salary meant that the shop, too, must close as it would be financially unsustainable. We formed an action group to attempt to stop this happening, and we fought the good fight, but we lost! At the "wake" held to thank the action group, it was suggested that if enough voluntee

rs could be found, perhaps the shop could remain open. At a public meeting in the Reading Room (our village hall built in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s jubilee) the community decided to go ahead and make the attempt to keep the shop open. Below we have listed the services we offer. Come visit, we'd love to see you! Shopping

The shop stocks a wide range of foods and essentials, from fresh and frozen goods to tobaccos, fresh and frozen local produce and gifts. Meeting

We are a meeting point where you can make new friends or enjoy contact with old ones. Post Office

We are a post office providing most post office services and also free personal banking with most banks, pensions/benefits, and with postal collections twice each day. Tea Room

We are a tearoom where you can enjoy a warming cuppa or a cooling lemonade depending upon weather! Dryslwyn Global Cafe

We are an internet cafe where you can use a 10Mb Wifi service, and reprographic services to manage your life and your contacts. Pop in to check emails, make a photocopy, design and print a poster and catch up on essential business. Volunteer with Us

How did a small village in south Wales turn adversity into achievement? For , Dr Rosie Plummer shares the people-powered journey behind Dryslwyn Community Shop, and their exciting next chapter. 🌟

Rosie describes the difference the shop has already made, with Plunkett's support, in an area that is recognised amongst Wales’ most deprived for access to facilities and services - and the opportunities of their new-build community hub on the horizon. 🔨

She writes about the intentional investment in local people and says that volunteering has "brought new folk in, grown friendships and connections, and built collective confidence". 😊

Polite reminder to customers and neighbours to please not use the bin outside the shop to dispose of large volumes of soiled nappies. We do not have the capacity to dispose of them appropriately so please take them home with you. We operate as a not-for-profit organisation so any costs detract from funds being given back to the community. Thank you 🌻
