Carlisle Castle

Carlisle Castle Standing strongly in the city it has dominated for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle was a constantly updated working fortress until well within living memory.

Now its rich and varied visitor attractions reflect its long and eventful history. Even before the medieval castle was begun, this site was an important Roman fortress. Today, the castle still plays a prominent role in Cumbria as one of its best loved landmarks. With the picnic area, a unique gift shop and being so close to Hadrian's Wall, the castle makes for a full family day out. The Cumbria Mu

seum of Military Life situated inside the castle's outer ward is open to visitors and is included in the Castle's admission price. Carlisle Castle is currently open daily from April-October, and weekends during the winter. The Military Museum is open daily throughout the year. HOUSE RULES

Carlisle Castle in the sixteenth century was on the verge of collapse as the Dacre Family and the Tudor Kings spent little money on the Castle. This was quickly changed during the Pilgrimage of Grace Rising in 1536-7 where Carlisle was attacked by rebels and the worry of a French and Scottish alliance that led them to invest more in improving the defences of the Castle. They brought in an Moravian land surveyor Stephan Von Haschenperg to modernise the defence of the Castle by creating spaces that could cope with heavy guns.

Bored Guards or Frustrated Prisoners? What do you think? At Carlisle Castle we have some amazing carvings drawn into the very fabric of the Castle Sandstone walls, all of different animals, figures and shapes. Do you think this was done by the guards on long days of duty, or prisoners so bored of being locked up that they decided to get creative?

In 1596 the infamous Border Reiver William of Kymowth or better know as Kinmont Willie was rescued by a band of Scots in the night. We have also just installed the new Border Reiver Gallery on the 3rd floor of the Keep, to tell the tale of the infamous Border Reivers.

With special thanks to Tullie for generously gifting us the boards.
