With the warmer weather approaching for this bank holiday, we know a lot more people will be heading to beaches, rivers, lochs, and reservoirs to cool off — but cold water can be dangerous, even on hot days.

Please stay safe in and around the water:
• Never enter the water after drinking alcohol
• Avoid jumping into unknown water — hidden hazards and cold water shock can be fatal
• Keep children within arm’s reach at all times
• If you get into trouble in the water, float on your back, stay calm, and call for help

If you see someone in difficulty:
📞 Call 999 and ask for Coastguard if at the coast, or Fire & Rescue / Ambulance for inland water incidents.
🛟 Throw something that floats — don’t put yourself at risk by entering the water.

Enjoy the sunshine, but make water safety your priority this bank holiday weekend ☀️

Tonight longtown crew took on an RTC drill at carlisle east. 🚒

We were presented with a car on its roof, we performed a 3rd door creation and a dashboard roll upside down. This gives the crew experience in creating the most space possible in a real life situation.

Think this could be for you? We are recruiting now!
Send us a message or pop into the station on a Tuesday night between 19:00 - 21:00 for more info.

On Monday evening we were mobilised to Front Street, Cotehill for this large fire involving workshops and garages. Longtown crew used their specialist compressed air foam system to help suppress this fire overnight and we got back to Longtown around 5am (just in time to get up for work).

A multi-agency response was called out to a major incident in a village near Carlisle.

***Update: the fire is now extinguished, and the motorway is in the process of reopening***

Crews from Carlisle East, Longtown Fire Station and Gretna, are currently fighting a vehicle fire on the M6 Southbound, between junctions 45 (Gretna) and Junction 44 (Kingstown) the Southbound carriageway is currently closed, but will be reopening again shortly.

Thanks for the patience of the vehicles currently stuck in the closure- this is for crew safety while we are actively firefighting, and we will reopen the carriageway as soon as it is safe to do so.

At approximately 16.55 on March 19th Longtown and Carlisle West Fire Station were mobilised to reports of a building fire at Blackford. Arriving approximately 9 minutes from first call, Longtown were confronted with a building which was well alight. Thankfully a single resident was out on arrival and was treated for smoke inhalation by the fire service and NWAS. Initial fire firefighting actions were undertaken to try and prevent additional fire spread, including to an attached dwelling.
Additional resources were requested from Brampton Fire Station Carlisle East Fire Station Penrith Fire Station with the water bowser from Maryport and the turntable ladder and support appliance from Barrow. Crews were in attendance until approximately 10:00pm by which time the fire had been extinguished with serious damage limited to one property only.

Thanks to Cumbria Police and Cumberland Council for additional traffic support during the incident.

Last night the Longtown Crew were mobilised to a building fire in Sleetbeck, supported by our colleagues from Brampton Fire Station and Carlisle. On arrival we discovered a fire in an integral garage. 2 breathing apparatus crews were deployed into the property and swiftly brought the fire under control with a singe hose reel jet. Crews used a positive pressure fan to clear the house of smoke and prevent further long term damage. All remnants of burning materials were removed from the garage which itself had sustained fire and smoke damage but thankfully had been contained by correct ceiling linings and a fire door to the main house which the occupant had shut on discovery.

On Monday evening around 22.00 we were mobilised to a chimney fire in the town, upon arrival we discovered a well developed fire within the chimney. Crew extinguished the fire using 1 hose reel jet a 12 meter ladder, roof ladder and chimney gear.

With what feels like a long cold winter, remember to get your chimney swept and inspected regularly, especially with heavy use and certain fuels. We always see an upsurge in Chimney fires both ends of winter.
