Velindre Matters Velindre Matters gives updates on our new Velindre Cancer Centre More and more of us are being diagnosed with cancer, and people are living longer with cancer.

For nearly 70 years, the Velindre Cancer Centre has offered vital specialist cancer treatment and support to people across south Wales. We are proud of our history, but we are constantly evolving to meet the growing demands for cancer services. Now more than ever, we need to adapt to make sure we continue to provide the world-class care Velindre is known for. Our dedicated staff treat and care for

thousands of patients from across south Wales every single year but the current cancer centre does not have the facilities or space necessary to meet the future needs of our patients and staff. Construction of our new Velindre Cancer Centre is underway, and it's one of the biggest projects Wales has seen in decades. Our nVCC will deliver better outcomes through world-class cancer treatment, enhanced diagnostic capability and greater access to innovation, training and research. Every aspect of the nVCC has been shaped around the needs of patients, staff, families, and carers. From easier navigation and better parking to therapeutic spaces and dedicated family areas, the new building will enhance comfort, dignity and the overall experience of care. It will be one of the most sustainable hospitals in the UK, providing leading cancer care for our patients and a better environment for our dedicated staff. The nVCC is designed to grow and adapt. With standardised, flexible clinical spaces, modern infrastructure, and greener energy use, the nVCC will meet the changing needs of cancer care and deliver long-term value for our patients, staff and the NHS. From design to operation, the nVCC leads the way in sustainable healthcare. It is the first all-electric hospital in the UK, uses renewable energy and has been designed to minimise environmental impact as much as possible while delivering the world-class cancer care Velindre is known for. Its sustainable features support Wales’s broader ambition to be net zero and resilient for future generations. Our dedicated staff are working together with Acorn, the consortium chosen to construct the new cancer centre, to build a facility that will serve future generations for decades to come. Sacyr UK, is the construction company building the cancer centre. Our new home is critical in safeguarding the provision of crucial treatment and care for the 1.5 million people of south Wales and is critical to keep pace with the increasing demand. More than just a new building, we're transforming our care across the system. Alongside our new Velindre Cancer Centre we've also opened the Velindre @ Nevill Hall Radiotherapy Unit. Construction of the new Velindre Cancer Centre is underway and we are scheduled to open in Spring 2027.

The team at Velindre are hosting a free community event with plenty of free arts and crafts on September 9 and we’d love for you to join us.

The session will take place at 19 Park Road from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

The event is just one of many the team attend as part of our wider Hefyd programme. Hefyd is our community benefits initiative as part of the new nVCC project that invests in and develops a series of programmes including arts, green social prescribing, sustainability and working with children and young people.
The nVCC will allow us to deliver improved outcomes through world-class cancer treatment, enhanced diagnostic capabilities, and greater access to innovation, training and research.

Our new home is more than just a building. It’s about transforming the way we deliver cancer care for people across Wales, improving experiences, supporting our workforce and ensuring we are ready to meet the challenges of the future.

This weekend the new Velindre Cancer Centre team attended Newport Pride as part of our ongoing Hefyd engagement programme 💚

The team spoke to dozens of people, answered questions about our new home and shared updates on the progress being made to deliver a world-class cancer centre for all of Wales.

The event on September 5 was just one of many that the team attends as part of Hefyd. Hefyd is our community benefits initiative, developed through the nVCC project, which invests in and supports a range of programmes focused on arts and culture, green social prescribing, sustainability, and opportunities for children and young people.

The nVCC project provides us with a unique chance for us to undertake new opportunities and explore the role Velindre plays in our wider communities.

Newport Pride was a great opportunity to meet residents, partner organisations and community groups while sharing information about our new home, scheduled to open in spring 2027.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by to speak with the team, share their thoughts and find out more about the future of cancer care in Wales.

Another big thank you to everyone who came along to our final jambori of the summer this week! 💚

These jamboris are just one of many events that makes up our Hefyd programme. Hefyd is our community benefits initiative as part of the new nVCC project that invests in and develops a series of programmes including arts, green social prescribing, sustainability and working with children and young people.
The nVCC will enable us to deliver improved outcomes through world‑class cancer treatment, enhanced diagnostic capability, and greater access to innovation, training and research.

Our new home is more than just a building. It’s about transforming the way we deliver cancer care for people across Wales, improving experiences, supporting our workforce and ensuring we are ready to meet the challenges of the future.

We wanted to share the latest images showing the progress on our new Velindre Cancer Centre.

These drone pictures show the scale and progress of our new home, scheduled to open in spring 2027.

Around twice the size of our current cancer centre, our new home has been designed with our patients staff in mind since day one. But more than just a new building, our new site marks a transformation in the care we’re able to provide to our patients.

We will operate one of the largest radiotherapy units in the UK, with 10 state-of-the-art linear accelerators (eight in nVCC and two in the Velindre @ Nevill Hall Radiotherapy Unit) alongside our outreach programme across South Wales. A dedicated radiotherapy research bunker - the first of its kind in Wales - will allow Velindre to lead on precision radiotherapy trials, while The Collaborative Centre will provide a regional hub for knowledge-sharing, professional training, and partnerships with academia and industry.

Our new centre improves access to clinical trials, offers cutting-edge treatment with expanded clinical capacity helping our patients live longer, better-quality lives.

Mae ein cartref newydd tua dwywaith maint ein canolfan ganser bresennol, ac mae wedi cael ei ddylunio gyda’n cleifion a'n staff mewn golwg o'r diwrnod cyntaf. Ond mae ein safle newydd yn fwy na dim ond adeilad - mae’n nodi trawsnewidiad yn y gofal y gallwn ei ddarparu i'n cleifion.

The new Velindre Cancer Centre (nVCC) team joined colleagues from the Trust at the Healthy Lives Community Engagement event.

More than 100 people visited our stand during the event, that brought together a range of health services, local authorities, charities, social care providers and community organisations.

The team, alongside our patient engagement team and our sustainability team, answered questions about our nVCC, scheduled to open in spring 2027, and shared updates on the wider work going on across the Trust.

The event was just one of many the team attend as part of our wider Hefyd programme. Hefyd is our community benefits initiative as part of the new nVCC project that invests in and develops a series of programmes including arts, green social prescribing, sustainability and working with children and young people.

Come along to our Summer Jambori for more free family fun ☀️

These jamboris are just one of many events that makes up our Hefyd programme. Hefyd is our community benefits initiative as part of the new nVCC project that invests in and develops a series of programmes including arts, green social prescribing, sustainability and working with children and young people.

The nVCC will enable us to deliver improved outcomes through world‑class cancer treatment, enhanced diagnostic capability, and greater access to innovation, training and research.

Our next jambori will take place on August 26.

Mae ein Jambori Haf yn ôl am fwy o hwyl i'r teulu am ddim ☀️

Dim ond un o nifer o ddigwyddiadau sy'n ffurfio ein rhaglen Hefyd yw'r jamborîs hyn. Hefyd yw ein menter buddion cymunedol fel rhan o’r prosiect Canolfan Ganser Felindre newydd, sy'n buddsoddi mewn cyfres o raglenni sy’n cynnwys y celfyddydau, presgripsiynu cymdeithasol gwyrdd, cynaliadwyedd a gweithio gyda phlant a phobl ifanc, ac sy’n eu datblygu hefyd.

Bydd ein CGFn yn darparu canlyniadau gwell gyda thriniaeth ganser o safon fyd-eang, gallu diagnostig gwell, a gwell mynediad at arloesedd, hyfforddiant ac ymchwil.

Bydd ein jamborî nesaf yn cael ei gynnal ar Awst 26.
